No joke, we work 100% legally. We tried to work at a middle school but we found out we could not unless we had a degree. Elementary Schools do not require a degree, at least thats what I know about Hunan. Also, my wife won the Lotus award for best FT in a public school in Hunan Province. You did if your goal was to only come to china and teach at an elementary school. If I had a degree I would not be in this crappy country. Thats why I'm not in Japan or Taiwan. I'm here to make enough money to go to school. People back home think this is a good idea, people in china seem jealous.

China is just an unfair county.

How has China been unfair to you? You are housed-given a cushy job-and return airfare to go home! All without even a degree. What an attitude!

But yes you can be legal here---elementary only sounds correct. Which is about the way it should be.

PS---Have you even been to Korea or Japan?

Thats right. I also called China great because in this country anyone can teach english, even the boring western washouts. A dumba** with a degree is still a dumba**. I should go to England and take klingon. At least I'd be a smarta** with a degree. If you can't get a better job than a person half your age with a high school diploma then you're in China, or you should escape your home country and come here quick, at least you might seem cool to a few Chinese people.

Speaking of which, voodikon must be a real winner in his home country.

The goal is to provide Chinese students with a quality education; there's more than escaping your McDonald's job at stake. Honestly, both Mr. Kevin and the OP need to advance their level of English competency to be a truly great asset to their students. If you don't want to do a degree, then do the right thing by simply opening an English textbook and advancing your skills.

I give every student of mine a quality education, and unlike most wash outs, a fun and interesting lesson everytime they see me. I also tought an engineering professor.

After everyone takes a deep breath, Perhaps there is a GRAIN of truth to Mr. Kevin's point. The 2 most pathetic teachers I ever met were degreed up the ying yang. They sure spoke awful articulate like. I wish they taught just as well as they impressed others with their oh-so articulately formulated, left of center, intellectually advanced utterances.

But when it was my turn to teach the kids that they had just completed a course with, their kids just plain didn't know their stuff. Confucious said, "Teach according to your student's abilities".

After the mental masterbators were finished, I had to basically re-teach what the towering intellects of power had neglected, and were supposed to teach. I know what Mr. Kevin means. The real mark of intelligence is being able to express, or paint a vivid mental picture without all the verbal diarroeah. Hemingway said it took him years to develop such a writing style. There's a certain beauty in simplicity. I really couldn't care less if another teacher has a doctorate or is a college drop-out. Just don't bugger up the kids by teaching ineffectively, degree or not.
Someone who actually gives a rat's ass may be the next teacher to take over at the next level. Degree or no degree.
