Hello everyone...just wondering if anyone knows how many hours you can work on a dependant's visa here in Japan.
My husband works for JET, I myself do not. I have two diplomas from college...before you tell me, I know that you need a degree to get a work visa. I am just wondering how much I am allowed to work with the dependants visa...I had thought it was 40 per week, but now I am not sure.
Thanks in advance!

I believe it is up to 25 hours a week.

Dont forget if you earn more than 80,000 yen a month your husband will get hit for secondary taxes on a spouses income and lose his deduction for dependents when he files a tax return (he has to declare both your incomes).

Yes, it is about 1.1 or 1.2 million/year. You should just do some private teaching, my wife does that.

Ok, thanks for the info...I am still a little unclear about one thing - is it actually illegal for me to work/make more than 25hours per week and 80,000 yen per month?
If a company does hire me full time and lets say I work 40 hours a week, making 250,000 a month...is this illegal, or do I just get the tax penalty?
My husband said that he is allowed to make 80,000 USD a year out of country tax free...does this have anything to do with it, or do the penalties only refer to Japanese tax?
I am very confused, and I can't seem to find any info on the Japan visa sight?

You are not allowed to work full time on a dependent visa. I know of someone who was forced to leave the country because of this.

A dependent visa is not a work visa. it is illegal to work on a dependents visa and if you want to work you have to seek immigration approval. they will not allow you to work full time for taxable income. If you want to work full time get the work visa that allows you to do that.

How would you like it if someone like me came to your country and snubbed their nose at your immigration and visa laws, and worked on a non-work visa? Its no different than being an illegal alien. No one will hire you full time on a dependent visa anyway.

I have heard of people being given 3 months to leave the country for violating the rules of their visa.

You can earn more (this is taxable income, you can earn money under the table with privates but i doubt you will be teaching 30 or 40 students at 2,000 yen an hour within a couple of months) but he will lose his spouse deduction. Its not illegal but it will hit his pocketbook as he will pay more in taxes and any overtime he does will just go in paying tax.

The $US tax provision means he can declare overseas income up to $80Kwithout paying taxes to the IRS in the US. Income under $80,000 he has to file a US tax return but does not pay $US taxes on it. It will have no effect on what he pays to the tax office in Japan.

If they are not university degrees but are simply diplomas you can not get a full time work visa with those. You need a 4-year degree to get a full time contract.

You could probably teach privates (undeclared income- tax office doesnt need to know) as well as part time at a language school (declared income) and just hope you don't get caught working more than that. Your contract will likely say how many hours you can work anyway. If you have 1 year of college you could work part time at NOVA as they offer flext time schedules

BTW I have heard of people working on dependent visas without doing the paper work and then the employer wants to sponsor their visa or seek approval for their visa. it gets very tricky trying to explain to immigration why you were working for 2-3 months without seeking prior approval. they take a very dim view of people flouting the labor and immigration laws here, at the risk of deportation.
