Hello,
I'm a Canadian currently teaching in Japan and have been offered to extend my contract for another year. I have a college diploma and a TESOL certificate and am hoping to be approved for a work visa from within Japan. My employer has told me that the laws have recently changed in Japan to allow people with college diplomas to obtain work visa as opposed to only those person with a university degree which was the law before. I am wondering if anyone knows if this change in the immigration/visa law is accurate or a contact where I could find out the validity of this claim. Any help anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated. |

I have read, and re-read, your post and I am baffled everytime I go through it. The only sense I can make out of it is that you must be on a Work Holiday Visa? How did you land a year contract with a WHV? Are you on a student visa right now? That would mean you could only work up to 28 hours a week, and I can't see why you would have a contract already. How is it that you are in Japan teaching right now?
I don't know about Canadian/Japan agreements for visa types, but I am sure your government and the Japanese government offer websites with requirements. |

Nismo: This isn't at all baffling. A WHV may be seamlessly renewed for up to a year. And as for number of hours allowed to work under it? No one looks and no one asks. Believe me. The eikaiwa where I used to work required us to work OVER 8 hours/day which equals 40hrs/wk but yet, when they spoke to immigration they told them that we worked about 20. Why? It was true. We only TAUGHT 20 of the 40+ hours/week we were at the office... Even though we taught 25 classes and had to be in the office from 1pm to 915pm M-F or T-S.
Anyway, that's besides the point. Point is, can you get a working visa? That's still, amazingly enough, a tough question to answer. Under normal circumstances I would say "no" but there have always been exceptions -- plus there is a little-know about loophole to the working visa guidelines (which I've become rather hazy on as it's been a while since I last looked at it)....
But this change to the law -- I don't know. I haven't heard. But if it's true I certainly wouldn't mind knowing about it either.
Best of luck.
