Glenski, this guy's 'qualifications' are an obvious lie....

I've been to Japan. And Singapore and Malaysia and Hong Kong. I spent two years teaching in the Philippines, more than four years teaching in Korea and more than a year teaching in Taiwan, I studied Japanese for a year, Chinese for three and am now pretty much fluent, have a Ph.D. and am now working as an Assistant Professor. |
Total B.S. There is no way someone could get a Ph.D. from a reputable university and yet be so completely ignorant about basic research strategy and methodology. I mean, even ignoring the lame attempt to "research" these topics with broad and uninformed questions on an anonymous public forum, how the heck did he write his dissertation without at least hearing of ERIC or Amazon.com? And if he was really "fluent" in Chinese, he'd have even less of an excuse--instead of bombarding this forum with inane questions, he should be reading Chinese research on these topics!
As you and Paul know, I worked for 6 years at a university in a small rural community near the Japan Sea, yet never had a problem getting my research done. I did my main body of research with Japanese-language materials, then supplemented it with books and articles ordered from English language sources overseas.
Martin thinks he has it tough? The only major university library near me had a total of fifteen English books in all of the Humanities! |

Glenski: Excellent summary of the topic. You have better research skills in your pinky finger than "Dr" Phipps has in his whole brain.
If he returns to this topic, he will be doing so in an utterly compromised and embarrassing position. One wonders what his response will be then. Shades of the old "Ludwig", eh? |

Martin, I was wondering how much your PhD cost you. I've got a few hundred dollars stashed away, and it would really add to my prestiege if I had one.
Cheers |

He spammed a number of other country boards (e.g., Cambodia, Hong Kong, etc.) as well.
Can't wait for the book to come out...not to mention the movie (dibs on the role of Glenski! ) |

Well, it's funny -- but I think many people here seem to have a fairly accute "asshat detector." They can determine who's on the level and who's a complete chach. I think we've figured out "Dr. Phipps" (and I use the title loosely) pretty early on.... It didn't even take his blatant insults to all the people who've tried to help and give advice to derive that conclusion.

Actually, I'm starting to think that you people were right all along: there IS no point talking to people here. With the exception of PAULH who obviously knows what he is talking about, I probably know more about teaching English in Asia than all of you people on this board put together |
I've given this matter about as much consideration and time as it deserves. Not much. But even in that, I think a number of people other than PAULH have indulged Phipps's literary pipe dream in this and his other thread. Given the lack of gratitude or even acknowledgment of having read these replies, I have done some serious self-study, and I offer the following empirically-based conclusion to Dr. Phipps, using only the most analytically correct language befitting the situation: Pi$$ off!

'A musician at home'
From Aesop's Fables
There was once a musician who had no talent whatsoever, but he played the lyre in a room that had thick plaster upon the walls so when he heard the echoing sound, he concluded that he must be anexcellent musician indeed. Puffed up with pride, he decided to perform on stage. But when he made his debut at the theatre, his performance was so dreadful that the audience threw stones at him, driving him off the stage. |
