hi,
i have read some of the posts here regarding going to japan and then looking for work.. but my situation is slightly different and i was hoping someone would be able to give me more specific advice, or comments...
one of my closest friends happens to be japanese and is back in japan at the moment. she and her family have invited me to stay with them while i job hunt. so i won't have the usual huge burden of not being able to support myself.
my questions are:
1. are my chances of getting a decent job really much higher? im indian, by origin and by passport, and its proving to be quite a nuisance really! so i am a bit concerned that i will end up with no job in japan. am i being paranoid?
2. i was wondering about the passport... my friends' mother is happy to sponser me, but im guessing it wouldn't be possible for her to sponser a work permit for me... am i right? (this is probably a stupid question, but i thought id just ask anyway)
3. and finally, im curious to know if anyone knows of or maybe is an indian-indian, if you know what i mean (!) and is teaching in japan. i just need some hopeful stories to boost my rather low confidence of ever finding a job!
cheers!

Noki, you dont say if you have a university degree and whether you qualify for a work visa.
English is not considered a native language in India and more like a second language. thats not to say you wont get hired but it will make things difficult for you.
The immigration regulations state that a non-native speaker should have 12 years of education including a university degree if they want to get sponsorship of a work visa.
A private individual can sponsor another persons visa but there are conditions attached and sponsors can be rejected if they are not deemed suitable. Some of the conditions required of a sponsor include:
a Japanese national or a long term resident of Japan, including those with spouse visas
be able to guarantee the person's personal welfare and livelihood in Japan. For a company this means providing proof of a minimum monthly income but i dont know what happens for individuals who sponsor visas.
Be able to cover any debts the person may incur, or any damages should you not be able to pay. This includes any hospital bills, medical expenses or loans. If you can not pay they go after the sponsor or guarantor of your visa.
Provide a return airfare to your home country should you not be able to afford it.
I dont know too many Indians teaching here though there is a large Indian community in Kobe. One site I did see (Wisdom 21) had some staff members from South East Asian countries (Bangladesh, Pakistan etc) and that school will sponsor visas, but you would need a degree most likely to be considered for most jobs.
Your best bet is to contact some schools, tell them your qualifications (and your ethnicity) and experience whether or not you have a degree (you may need for the visa) and when you can be in Japan to attend interviews. You could line up some work before you arrive but most will want to meet you after you arrive in the country. |

that was really helpful... thank you!
i have a degree from india and a masters from the UK as well as a CELTA cert.
all my education has been in english, and that's more than 16 years. so hopefully the visa will work out.
ive checked out the wisdom 21 website, and it seems really promising. if there are any other schools with an open and diverse employment policy that anyone knows of, i would be very grateful to learn about them.
thanks once again!
