have just moved into a room with the relative luxury of cable TV.
Cnn is basically the only news channel - its a bit like starship troopers`really.. I mean *beep* me it`s bullshit...
Why don't they actually put any news on it?

Could be worse - I have only Fox News in English... and the local (in-country) ones seem to be hyper-fascinated with car wrecks, blood and crying moms....

hairy:

Since you are in Chile, you will soon be able to receive news from a satellite tv channel that is a joint project of the governments of Venezuela, Argentina and Brasil. This channel was specifically designed to counteract the US propaganda emitted by CNN--especially in regard to Latin America.

For someone as educated as you claim you are, you are also very naive.

The US government does not tell CNN what to report and what not to report. It is a private company.

Propaganda is distributed by governments to change political opinions.

When governments get together to put out a new media source countering private free companies, that is called propaganda.

Nice try though commie...

i don't think moonraven is naive, she's a product of the ivory tower. she lives in a fantasy world where idealism somehow equates to realism, and lefty conspiracy theories rule the day.

remember when she called you a moron for suggesting that osama bin laden was still alive, and then it turns out that he's still alive and well and releasing video tapes?

but i suppose that's also a george w bush conspiracy.

i dislike bush as much as anyone, but far leftists are just as bad as far rightists. they're both more interested in furthering their delusional political agendas then actually seeking out the truth.

Dear GWW,

Propaganda takes many forms, of which political propaganda is just one, and only a proportion of such propaganda originates from the state. This propaganda can be disseminated in many ways. Very often this involves planting news stories in the media with the (witting or witless) help of individuals or organisations be they friendly to the propaganda sources or simply desirous of having access to the 'latest news'.

Your inference that the US govt would never seek to influence how CNN choose to report its goings-on and those of its 'enemies', especially when it finds itself embroiled in the longest, largest, and most damaging war/conquest/invasion/liberation action/making of the world a safer place for democracy/securing of legitimate US interests in the Middle East/repayment of its moral and financial debt to Haliburton and Big Oil (please delete as applicable according to political perspective/personal beliefs/individual opinion/current mood) for many years displays a wonderful degree of trust, if a quite astonishing level of naivity!

Could luck with your quest to lead us all safely back to our prior state of innocence but I think that you will find that our banishment from that particular garden was meant to be permanant!

Are people still under the illusion that there is a 'left' and a 'right' in politics, and that they represent two different opinions?!

There is only one agenda! The left and the right are just a smokescreen giving us the ILLUSION of choice and 'democracy'. I'm afraid we live under covert facist dictatorships.

ALL mainstream news channels are propaganda machines, as at their highest levels they are directly linked to the current front governement.

Just look at how 9/11 was 'reported'. The government run media had complete control of all information on that day and the flimsiest story imaginable was swallowed by most of the world. There is now overwhelming evidence that the WTC was blown up, that a 747 could not have hit the pentagon, that there were explosions prior to the planes hitting the towers... the discrepancies are endless... but we'll never see those on CNN, ABC, FOX et al... i'm afraid you have to find your own news these days.

Yes, the US government influences what CNN reports. But they don't use CNN like China uses CCTV or South Korea uses Arirang TV.

The US can "influence" but not "order" CNN to say whatever Mr. Bushie wants. CCTV spouts what it is told to spout, and so does the crappy Arirang in South Korea.

Politics...

I thought I escaped it in Canada...

Whiner, dear, I suggest you re-think your opinion. The government's influence on mainstream media is deeper than you understand.

I agree with Colleen.Ever since GW took office the media in America is a lot more controlled and albeit censored.

Here's an example, in part - you may read the entire story here:

http://www.newsday.com/news/nationworld/nation/ny-main12,0,240731,print.story?coll=ny-homepage-big-pix

From Inside the Kerik mess:

Quote:
Despite his embattlements, however, there were few, if any, clues that Kerik was about to pull the plug on his biggest career venture.

Rep. Peter King (R-Seaford) said the White House seemed to have been caught off guard.

He said that as late as 7 p.m. Friday, just 90 minutes before Kerik telephoned President George W. Bush and withdrew, the White House faxed King talking points defending the nomination for his use during a TV appearance.

See what I mean?

I see what Whiner means. Arirang is like a permanent good-time guide to Korea. Subscriptions to the channel come with free vomit bags. It is used overtly to plug the 'wonder' that is the Land of the Moaning Clam. CNN does not do this. It is covert where Arirang is overt... in the same way that the Air Forces Network is overt.

You know what? The fact that we are having this debate at all shows one thing: that most of the people here don't realise that all media is propaganda in some form or other. The fact that the OP was surprised to find CNN plugging some form of US ideology simply shows their naivety. Nothing more...

The point is moot.
