Hey

I am considering teaching in japan - but as i hav not uni degree i can only work part time on a working holiday visa.

NOW, the working holiday visa stipulates you must move employer every 3 months or something like that. I asked NOVA (the only company i can work for) about this and was told - quote "yeah, but they never keep check of it".

If it stupid to try and de-fraud the Japanese government by staying at one NOVA school for the full 12 months?

ALSO - i was thinking of applying for a possition in Sapporo, Niigata or Nagano. Supposedly you earn approx 176,000 - 202,000 a month in Sapporo.

Now, is this enough to live? I have looked so many different websites and asked so many people but never been given a straight answer.

I would cook 90% of my own dinners 100% breakfasts, and probably 50% of all lunches. I wouldnt go out partying every night, maybe once or twice a month.

Would i end up saveing anything? Or would it just be enough to live there?

I know NOVA is not best in the world but its my only option i believe (if anyone knows another way please tell :p) hehe

please if someone can help
george

I can't give you any advice on the working holiday visa except to say that it seems many people do as the NOVA person told you.

A salary of 176,000 will barely pay for your bare necessities. You will have absolutely nothing left over for anything else.

depending on who you talk to, the working holiday people now allow you to work full time or part timer on the WHV. this may mean a 40 hour week for 3-4 months or part time for 12 months. Someone posted last month and said the WHV office is Tokyo finds fulltime jobs for people. A lot depends on what immigration in your country says.

And yes the NOVA guy is right, they wont check on how many hours you work , but last I heard NOVA will not hire you full time unless you have a degree. FlexTime is the only one available and i dont think you can do overtime there.

I wouldnt really say its defauding them as you are not stealing any money from them. They know that people are going to work here anyway. As long as you dont break the law you will be OK. working 40 hours is not illegal but its not in the spirit of the WHV either.

180,000 yen is about the break even point after you take out rent, food utilities, phone, insurance etc. On a part time income you wont have much left over and you will probably wnat to travel some too. On a full time income of 250,000 yen a month you could probably save 50-70,000 yen but thats not all that much. there are many ways to save money and a lot willl depend on where you live as more rural areas are cheaper and rent is lower, but there are less jobs and less foreigners around.

Becuase the goal of the working holiday program is not to find a full time job or treat the visa as a semi-teaching visa. Whether you earn enough is not really their concern and they are restricted in the hours they offer by immigration rules. You are supposed to use the working holiday visa to sightsee, travel around the country, experience the culture, and learn the language. Thats also why they recommend you come with several thousand dollars to support yourself. The aim of the WHV is not to spend 40 hours a week or your whole time in Japan teaching in a language school. If you do that you are really no different than someone who comes here to work with a university degree and you should therefore come with the proper visa.

Another thing is NOVA used to offer overtime to part timers and they were getting paid more in salary than full timers doing the same hours. I dont think Flextime people on WHV can do overtime anymore.
