I have walked naked from my shower room into my bedroom to find my maid and half her family standing there staring at my essentials. |

I recommend Surabaya. EF Bukit Mas is a cool school. The staff and teachers are great and everyone is really supportive of each other. The pay is about 6,100,000 and they give you a housing allowance if you choose to get your own place. You can rent a decent house for 8 million rupiah, which covers the whole year. The EFs in Surabaya are basically owned by the same people, so you will visit all three schools during your training and get to meet all the other teachers. I think EF is good for someone who wants to gain experience in ESL because it gets your foot in the door and you do learn a lot about grammar and creating lessons. It's a good experience.
There are plenty of shopping malls and there is also a carrefour(sorry, forgot the spelling). There are movies theaters and some English bookstores. You can live a comfortable life on your salary and travel Indonesia as long as you don't blow your money on drinking.
Hope this helped:) |

I would regard a live-in pembantu as a punishment rather than a perk. Mine comes in two days per week and I make a point of going to the gym on those mornings for a bit of peace. The woman has a heart of gold and does a fine job of the laundry but she has no concept of intrusiveness and it would drive me insane to have her around 7 days. She also has an uncanny knack of being able to destroy virtually any item of plumbing.
Because we live close to some excellent eateries I never cook anything and twice per week is enough for the pembantu to wash & iron and clean the house. |

EF Surabaya will grind you into hamburger meat!
But, you could do worse than hanging out with some of the folks there - most of them are ok.

Well, further to my comment about EF Makassar, they seem to have gone off the line. They had problems with their e-mail address, and now not answering mail. Maybe they gave someone the job on offer, and can't be bothered to let the rest of us know! |

EF Makassar isn't so good anyway. The salary is one of the lowest out there & you must take all your vacation days at the end of your contract - just what you need when you're working 6 days a week for a year!!!!

Ok, so as far as I can gather EF Pondok Indah pay the best out of all the EF branches at 8 mil for first contract.
So what do the rest of you lot in Jkt earn (1st contract teachers wage)?
I am also curious about accommodation. Does this vary or do most Jakarta branches pay nothing towards it? Does rent get deducted from pay if you stay in a shared house organised by the franchise?

You could try checking Dave's job page too. You will soon see who is advertising for yet another teacher. One school in Jakarta advertises about every two weeks.. |
Are you suggesting that this is a bad sign?
Last question. The Pluit/Tebet/T Duren group have jobs starting end of Feb. What are term dates in EF schools? I thought the school year started in Jan, if you start at the end of Feb when would a contract be like ly to finish, is it always 12 months exactly?
Cheers guys
Good luck |

Terms? No terms...just constantly churning onwards. You will soon see that the analogy of 'sausage factory' is quite correct. With the exception of the xmas & ramadan holidays the EF machine grinds on & on & on...

I hadn't noticed the "vacation at the end of the contract" bit. No other EF school does that.
Some schools in JKT do provide accom, and take some rent out of your pay, but it's very reasonable. Otherwise you go and find your own.
Yes, I think that if a school advertises often, then something must be wrong. No school can turn over a teacher every two weeks, surely?? That's 26 a year!! |

If renting your own accomadation is it correct that you pay 12 months rent upfront?

Cheers guys |

Not sure on prices now, but most leases are now for 2 years (up front).
Maybe 8mil a year for a basic house in Surabaya (but that was 2 years ago)

Hellooo
Me thinks Ef Makassar job has gone know. My girlfriend and I applied for the jobs going there but we got turned down because my girlfriend is German. Ahhh. They could not get a residents permit for her, non native and all that rubbish!! She's a European!! We did our training in Brighton and have been in China for a year. We planned to go to Indo next. Can my girlfriend work in Indo or will she be turned down because of the non native thang?? By the way EF China was a great experience and I would work for them again no problems.
