I recommend it if you haven't tried Gmail before... been using it for about 6 months now. |

And my isp will give me any number (well, 100) of 1gb email accounts usable either as a regular pop3, imap, or online. If you want one, say so. |

Um, isn't this the system where for a GB of mail storage your your e-mails get scanned for context-specific ad placement?
Mmmmm.... Unfortunate ad placement.

and yet you have hotmail.
You have to be pretty naive to think that ANY online mail service is entirely secure. At least Google are upfront about what they do with your mail.
We've been over this all before on the tech forum and Google is just as 'creepy' as any other online service. Google however, lets you download via POP to your hard drive so you NEVER need to keep any of your mail online (you can even set it to delete your mail from Google once you've downloaded it automatically). Hotmail however now charges for this service and there is no automatic ability to delete stuff from their server (though you can enable this in Outlook I believe)
So, bet you've got goosebumps now |

I've just realised that the ad link you sent us to has to be a fake hasn't it?
Gmail that I've used has never displayed an image ad. Ads are only text. What you have pasted a link to I doubt has anything to do with Gmail. Urban myth perhaps... probably believed simply on the basis of your scepticism if you yourself have never used gmail. |

shmooj: I hand out my hotmail e-mail address indiscriminately. Highly disposable -- never read the mails that come in. I just log in about once a month to ensure they don't deactivate my account. A Gmail address with 1GB store would make it a bit more than just "disposable storage"...
Also, no the link I provided is NOT a fake.... I wasn't trying to imply that Gmail dispensed this ad, only that advertising that's based on e-mail content is highly subject to be inappropriate. Since Google is the purveyor of the ads, I can likely find you an example involving Google very easily.
Here's one. (I don't have GMail so "Ads by Google" should be sufficient. I think it uses the same engine).

It's not inappropriate or disturbing... Just funny. But nonetheless, something I could do without. |

Hey Jim,
If you click on the link in my original post it will take you to the gmail information page. They are quite forward and explicit about how the ad's are generated, unlike some other free web-based services. I have been using gmail for about 5 months and I find it WAY superior to Hotmail that I was using before. I have also found that spam mail is almost nonexistent in gmail, something that can't quite be said for hotmail.
By the way Jim, I am out of invites so you will have to wait.....

Flog the horse a bit more. HOtmail is full of visual advertising which I guess you could also do without but, hey, you don't seem to mind that. Gmail has advertising for sure but
a) it only appears when it can find something relevant in your mail so many personal shorter emails have no advertising at all as it is based on specific keywords
b) it is very unobtrusive and I had forgotten all about it until you mentioned it
I'm not suggesting you yourself or anyone for that matter MUST get gmail. I just don't like it when someone misrepresents something - especially when they have no personal experience of it themselves. |

Then there are all the conspiracy theorists who insist that because the server is automatically scanning emails for keywords, somewhere in the google tower of doom some dark-overlord is reading their email, plotting misfortune. Like their email is any safer sitting on any other hosts' web servers, or anyone cares about a stranger's life enough to read their email, for that matter.
I've had GMail since early February of 2004, and I love it to pieces. I won't give it up until a better offer comes along. |

I'd rather have gmail than hotmail. I agree a lot less junk/spam/
gar-bah-ge!
I just wish your gmail prefix could be 4 characters long, but I guess you can't have it all!
"somewhere in the google tower of doom some dark-overlord is reading their email, plotting misfortune" ha!ha!ha!ha!ha! I'm still rolling on the floor over that one Nismo! Love it! just love it!
ps: i have invites to the google underworld if anyone wants? |
