Hi guys. I work for JET and I have a question for you. My rent is 45,000 yen a month but about 50% of this should be paid for me by the BOE as a housing allowance. Taking this into consideration, how much money should be being paid into my bank account every month. I only ask this because I think I`ve been receiving about 240, 000 yen a month, which seems a little low to me given that I should only be paying about 20 or 25,000 yen a month on accomodation. Thankyou very much for your time.

There are usually more deductions than just your rent (like electricity and assorted taxes, often your phone bill is auto-deducted so that you don't have to through with paying it yourself etc).

It soesn't sound all that unusual to me.

Thanks for the reply. Forgive my ignorance but does auto-deduction mean that the electricity/phone etc bills are taken from my wage BEFORE my wage is actually put into my bank account. I just wanted to be clear about this.

About auto-deduction...

It depends on who is doing the deducting. If it is your company, then it will be taken out at the time of payment, before they make the deposit. If it is the utility company then they would have given you a specific date that they would be making the withdrawal from your bank account. It is typically taken out around the end of the month.

BTW, don't you receive a payslip explaining your deductions?

That sounds about right. You are having pension and medical deducted also. (If you haven't been getting your pay stubs, ask for them and all of the deductions will be detailed there in Kanji. You can get a friend to translate it for you). I am on JET too and I pay 14 000 yen a month for rent and I bring home about 250 000 after all is said and done. Remeber with the pension deductions that you will get that back after you have returned to your home country. It works out to about 1 month's salary for each year that you were here, and you get it about 3 months after you return. There is paperwork to be filled out for this, though so be sure to get it from your supervisor or prefectural advisor before you go back.
