I hope to be ready to travel by this spring. I am an artist in my spare time and would like to continue painting while teaching overseas.

My question is about art supplies. Does anyone know the availablity of canvases and artist quality (not student quality) brushes and paint? Is any country preferable to another for this sideline??

Thanks

In major cities in Japan the department store Tokyu Hands will sell you professional quality materials at professional quality prices. In the boonies in Japan, you can pretty much forget it.

One thing about Japan is that they take their hobbies very seriously indeed. If you can find a local group doing the same kind of art as you are, chances are you will track down suppliers for everything you could want through them.

Korea is another story Wink

Thanks for your reply. I think I am too old to go to Japan to work. I have heard they have upper age restrictions.

Shmooj, what did you mean about Korea being another story?

What about Thailand, China and or Taiwan for art supplies?

I think death is the upper limit in Japan. I worked with teachers in their 60s. True, you might be in your 80s for all I know but I think you'll find that it is the company that might have preferences and not the country as a whole. Smaller outfits might well want someone more mature, less flighty but they'd want to be convinced you weren't on your last legs too.

Korea... well I saw your post over there too... shame I can't comment on it as I'm not into that kind of art myself.
