Is ANYONE interested in continuing this topic discussion...?

Please be candid with me...

Just a note: Some people think that having a Bible in their room constitutes integrating the Bible into their classroom...probably not -
but it certainly wouldn't hurt for reference...

Paulie, you've been fired from your job right?

If you are still around, care to relate your experience to this thread?

I haven't been following this thread, too long. However, I've just been asked to teach a new course in my university: the Bible and Christianity. This is at a secular Japanese university, certainly is something out of the blue and unexpected, however I am looking forward to it.

When I was in university--admittedly sharing space with various kinds of dinosaurs--courses on the order of The Bible As Literature were fashionable in public universities. I attended a Jesuit university for 2 years--and there was only one course focused on the Bible in the Theology department--and it dealt with the Old Testament.

There's nothing wrong with using the Bible, or the Coran, or anything else in the classroom--so long as you are not doing it with the idea of converting people.

The OP was using it to convert (supposedly)--or more likely to abuse his authority as a teacher. Sooner or later, abusers of power and authority go too far--and either bomb Bagdad or somebody fires their butt out of there. The OP's employers clearly had more on the ball than the percentage of the US population that has supported Bush's abuse of power--internally and externally....Probably because they didn't realize that they ARE his employers...?

Hello everyone! Very Happy
While I was reading all these posts I thought "Oh...is this a religious website?" Shocked (joking! Wink ) I would not discuss the fact of what is more important or so, if its the Bible, the Koran, or whatever, I think that beliefs are not subject to discussion, but they are a question of faith. (Let me tell you that I am a Catholic woman teacher raised in a private Catholic school, but I respect all religions though I dont agree with some). My mother always told me "Marce, dont speak with people about religion OR politics, it always leads to bigger arguments", dont you think thats right?
But as regards what Paulie actually asked on first place, I think its difficult to teach english using biblical texts. I used to work in a Catholic school, but we only used some texts like the biography of Mother Teresa of Calcutta, the Lords Prayer, etc. If you have any other idea, let me know please Wink
Good luck! Wink

Hey Guy,

To set the record straight (and lessen the impact upon my ego), no, I wasn't 'fired' from my position...I gracefully declined to teach classes that had disruptive students. The boss of this school likes to think that he can sit securely in the sanctitiy of his office while the school he started (in his mind, anyway) can run itself. Money is the borttom line...as I knew it to be all along. Si, I'm resigned - and I've resigned myself to being officially resigned. I'm still friends with the bunch tho, and may be back to teach a higher level next year, since I'm now buying a place here.

Life goes on...I guess it would even without me...
