This is one of the things I recommend we stick to our guns when negotiating for a job: airfare is a national legal requirement for the hiring of FTs, part of any regular contract. 5000 has for ages been the accepted one-way fare; after a certain time spent teaching at the same school it might even rise to a hefty 10'000 for a roundtrip. Some pay 7000 or more after just one year for a one-way ticket. To demand proof you actually areflying out of China is a new tack on our slave-drivers' part. I guess they are reckoning we make extra cash this way; however, it is OURS by law, no matter whether we stay put or not. It often is in lieu of paid holidays (in summer).

I think they ask for the actual receipt and/or ticket stub (and generally not a copy) to insure you won't go to another school and use it again, then to another school and use it again, and so on. I gave my FAO a COPYof my air ticket and have retained the original. I know they will lose the copy, so I have my backup when the time comes.

i guess a good thing to ask before starting work/signing contract is to ensure that the end of contract airfare reimbursement is paid out, whether or not you are leaving china. at least get it in writing, which is about as much as you can do.

I too checked the written agreement, to double check exactly what is says:

Quote:
Party A should cover a one-way international ticket for Party B, but the maximum amount should not exceed RMB 4,000.

So the word "reimburse" is not used in my contract, either.

But we all know what a written contract is worth in China.......

1) Either buy the new ticket which you need anyway, and make them pay. or 2) even better, make them buy the ticket and give them the receipt from the local travel agency.. That way, they get their CHinese Fa Piao! Now if you already have the return ticket and want some cashola, email your travel providr, they are sure to have a record, have them send an invoice to you electronically or by fax.

Technically, there should be a clause in your contract that basically says, 4000 RMB to be paid for return airfare at beginning of second semester for a one year, (double semester ) contract term. Therefore making the payment obligatory and a receipt requirement ridiculous. They pay you the cash, and you buy the ticket. But if 4,000 RMB aint gonna cut the cowst of the airfare, and the contrat is ambigous to the amount of return airfare,, you have to deal with their terms on the receipt and by which case refer to options 1 or 2. Frankly, My opinion, no airtickety.. no teachy..
