Hi,
Has anyone any advice about working in Inner Mongolia? In particular Hohhot? Have not been able to get much info about working out there and have to decide about a job soon. Any advice would be great.
Cheers. Smile

For what it's worth, I've never taught in Inner Mongolia, but a good friend of mine has. She said it was difficult but really rewarding. If you like being cold and eating mutton, you'll probably have a rewarding experience too. It's all so relative, you know. Perhaps your school will provide more modern conveniences than the school where my friend worked. Check out the JOB INFORMATION JOURNAL on Dave's. Just click on the link above for JOB INFORMATION JOURNAL. You'll find some other comments.

Good luck! Hope this helps! Laughing

It's not Mongolian-inhabited though nominally it is Mongolian territory; the Chinese outnumber locals at least 50 to one. Whatever reason you have to choose to work there rather than in coastal China, living in an ethnic minority area can't be the motive. Hohot also is pretty stalinesque. Winters get rather harsh, and they probably heat with coal. It's the China that's fast disappearing - the socialist, ugly cubist-architectural one with neighbourhood watches and a strong PLA presence in big cities. Personally I like the dry hot summer there but I hear airborne sand makes breathing difficult in spring and autumn, and dust settles everywhere every day.
