What is the point of this site? I swear that the jobs advertised on it never actually change. The jobs there now are exactly the same ones that were on there when I was first looking for a job in China in the summer of 2003! Does all seem a bit pointless to me...

Hello Renegade. How's Wuhan treating you? As regards your post, you are spot on! I rarely see anything on tefl.com that I didn't see the previous time. Always the same - AES, Bond, English First, British Institute, etc..........

tefl.com is probably the most recognised TEFL job site on the net, and I believe the cost to advertise is high. I can't put a figure on it, but it was out of the range of a previous employer. As a result, many of the postings are from Franchise schools, which have a central pool of money to spend on advertisements - such as English First, Bond Institute, AES, etc.

I have started to become a bit snobbish about tefl.com recently, dismissing it as the site for TEFL newbies - those not in the know about all the obscure country-specific sites that all the "veterans" have long been using. However, I have a much greater reason for being sceptical these days - My current (very soon to be ex-current) exployer) advertises on the site as a "premium sponsor", and given my general disgust for my (soon to be ex) school, I think it will be a long time before I will be able to take tefl.com seriously.

Yeah, the places on there don't seem to be all that great. I did find this job on there, but when I first arrived it was dodgy in all sorts of ways (having to get the minibus over to the branch school early in the morning {although that was just me and one other person}, the number of people crammed into the downstairs flat, the office hours, the night curfew). Some of those problems have been resolved but I only stayed because I met Mrs CD. I am sure there are far better places even for a first job. however I reckon you are right that Tefl.com is mostly for newbies...

Are you planning to stay in China next term?

Yes. It looks that way. You see, I must also cator for a certain Miss PB. My once mighty dreams of exploring the world, of sampling diverse and intriging cultures, of untold adventures that would have lived with me for all time - all this cut short. By a woman. A damned attractive one, but a woman none-the-less. When I look into her face, I see not just the beauty, the innocence, the goodness. I see lost my lost hopes and ambitions. Oh well. These things happen I guess.

As regards teaching sites, I am currently finding eslteachersboard.com to be the most fruitful.

(I realise there is a sticky on the subject)

Ah. It happens to many of us. At one point I had vague ambitions to travel the length and breadth of South East asia, go to Tibet, etc. Now since I've met someone long term, that isn't going to happen unless I get a job paying substantially better...

I'll have a look at eslteachersboard...
