Hi,

I've graduated from a 4-year Honours B.A. program, and have over a year of experience working with young children, along with extensive non-teaching work experience.

I want to leave Canada (Toronto) and do a teaching placement in late March-early April.

I do not know where to go :S
I need somewhere that will offer me airfare, housing, and a decent salary.

My dreams were set on Thailand but I can't find any placements, unless I have a teaching designation (which I do not wish to take).

I need a place that has mild winters, decent weather, and allows me to enjoy various diverse cultures and the ability to travel around on a motorcycle (which is something I would want to purchase when I arrive)

Any ideas please?

Hi Newt,

Ignore 'British', as you can see he/she/it's far from British.

Sounds like Asia would be your best bet. Perhaps Japan, Taiwan etc. But if Thailand's your dream and you have savings, go for it!

China might be a little easier especially if you are looking for someone to pick up your airfare, although salary might not be grand.

I wish people will just stick to the Question when replying to a posting.

why do It always have to lead to a war over Grammar on here.

I was told this fourm was to make friends and help each other and help others but we only have a war on one word its a shame.

hey newt:

congratulations on finishing your studies. the public school program in korea begins in march and takes new teachers. airfare, vacation, and housing are included. it's a good place for cycling and many canadians are here. it is called epik.

What exactly did you mean by "placement"? It sounds like an internship or something.

If you are looking for a job, you are qualified enough to teach in Japan, but probably only at conversation schools (eikaiwas) and on the JET programme.

Since JET's deadline for applications for 2005 is long gone, you will have to wait almost another year for them.

Eikaiwas hire practically anytime, and April is a common start date for their terms. However, you'd better get your hat in the ring soon because it takes 2-4 months to sort out visa paperwork. If you choose to go the route of a working holiday visa, however, you can bypass that and get it in 2 weeks or so. Problem is, you can only work here one year on that type of visa. It will give you the chance to look around, though, and see what else there is to offer, and then convert to a work visa.

Be advised that the majority of places in Japan do not pay airfare or housing costs, and that the standard salary at eikaiwas is 250,000 yen/month. (JET pays airfare, and many JET ALTs get cheap or free housing, but not all of them. Some eikaiwas offer an end-of-contract bonus equivalent to airfare just to give you a reason to stick around. Most eikaiwas provide furnished housing that has been recycled from previous teachers. Sparse in some cases, but free is better than nothing, especially since on your own, you'd usually need a guarantor to move in, plus you'd have to cough up 2-5 times a month's rent equivalent just to move in, and you'd have to furnish the whole place yourself. That means EVERYthing from stove to refrigerator to washing machine to light fixtures.)

With that salary, you can expect to burn half of it on basic necessities, and if you go out twice a week, you'll burn another 30,000-50,000 yen/month, leaving you with 70,000-90,000 yen/month for everything else in life. That's about as "decent" as it gets here, but be advised, too, that many eikaiwas are offering less than 250,000 and people are desperate enough to take it.
