I am newly qualified CELTA grad. I have 6 months teaching exp and now I wish to travel to Japan. However I do not have a degree therefore I am finding it difficult to apply for jobs.
Would I be taking a risk if i flew out there and seeked employment independently? When is the best time to go ?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Laura,
What is your nationality? If you are American, you will be unable to get a work visa.

If you are Canadian, Australian, British, or New Zealander, you might qualify for a working holiday visa.

Other than that, you won't be able to work here unless you marry the right person (Japanese person for spouse visa, non-Japanese person with a FT job here for a dependent visa).

Without a WHV you would be arriving on a tourist visa and once you hit the ground the clock starts ticking til your money runs out. You will find it runs out way quicker than you can imagine. In the meantime, the problem of having no degree is not one of employability in terms of your abilities as a teacher, it is a simple requirement of visa processing for your employer. They MUST have some sort of higher education certificate. I managed to get someone with an HND past them before as they'd never heard of it and considered it equivalent to a BA but without something like this, they will reject the application. So, employers will expect you to have this.

Basically, being there in person to apply will not solve the problem, I'm afraid.

These sources may have some leads on quality of life in various locales. I would add that it might help to know what sort of place where you are interested / not interested in living. Urban vs. rural. Availability to fine arts, water sports, Japanese culture, etc. Preference on climate. Those sorts of things.
