ECC doesen't want to take responsibility for bicycle accidents.
They claim to have had quite a few teachers get into bicycle accidents, who called in to say they couldn't make it into work.
Also some messy situations as to whether their employees were responsible for the accidents or not.
(ECC's explanation) |

| Interesting.... my housemate rides her bike to the station everyday. She's had her bike taken away, but she hasn't been told not to ride it. I just happen to not own a bike. Though no one has said anything to me about not riding a bike to the station. |

| Every year they mention it at the Personnel Workshop in April Training. Something to look forward to...... hopefully it is much better than last year |

| Sadly I was rejected today. I guess I can still keep my fingers crossed for JET. Good luck to everyone else. |

Bummer. If it's not too painful, would you care to share with us why you think you were passed over? I myself have an interview with them in Vancouver on the first.
Good luck with JET. I also filled out a JET application. Though I think I'd rather be with JET than with ECC, I'm currently without a job (though far from destitute) and the quicker I can get one, the better. (I should have sent in the JET paperwork in '03 instead of last year...) |

| At the end of my interview, the interviewer talked to me. He mentioned that perhaps I needed to be a little more animated during my teaching demo. I also believe that my being engaged to a Japanese girl, along with my knowledge hurt my chances as well. The interviewer claimed to have worked in Japan for 8 years, yet couldn't answer simple questions about things like banking and power conversion. Afterwards, I answered most of the questions I could to the other candidates. I'm not to down about not getting hired. I would rather not work until 10 at night, and feel like I'm just a cog in a machine. JET is a much better fit for me. Regardless of the outcome I am still going as I will have a spouse visa, and have to option to look for something else if there is anything else I could do without knowing the language. |

| ECC is usually desperate for teachers around the end of March. If you are in Japan around that time. I would call one of their offices in Osaka, Nagoya or Tokyo. ECC does have some problems but is one of the better Language schools. |

| For those of you in ECC now, how are the living/working conditions? Have they changed? I was recently hired by them and haven't found that much information for people in their current state. |

I am very surprised at the level of support ECC has provided thus far. They seem to be going out of their way to try to fulfill our preferences and make us comfortable teaching.
The accomodations in Osaka are through Apollo, but I assume the other agencies they employ are along the same lines. They're convenient and good for the first year. After that though, you're being a little ripped off since if you calculate it out you're being charged a portion of key money in your monthly rent every year for your contract (they don't charge key money up front).
I would certainly recommend ECC over other Eikaiwa, but I don't know too much about the others. |
