it seems hard to utilise some of your suggestions in our monolingual classes here in Korea.

Well Shmooj, I don't see why my activity couldn't work with a monolingual class. My classes are multilingual, but remember, they all speak French to one another. The activity always goes well.

Nah... I was thinking of the outings idea really... best I can manage is a trip to Starbucks with me as the centre of conversation otherwise it degenerates into L1...

I see your point, Shmooj. Outings are next to impossible in a non-Anglophone society. Are there any places where English is prevalent? I remember, when I was in Korea, the museums were bilingual. Mind you it was the most atrocious English I had ever encountered, but it was better than nothing.

it requires a great deal of discipline on the part of the learner to find ways to use what he/she has learned in real life outside the class.

we can't do it for them. Just like with any subject - teachers can teach but they can't go to work for their students. If the economics student just can't see the influence of macroeconomics in their daily lives the economics professor can only do so much.

Moreso in language learning.

Anyway, Headway is the best of a bad breed. I feel most agree on this.

So, Carnac, that's why my posting disappeared. You must have had the experience of speaking tests in which the answers are almost invariably "I go Bahrain", "I go Dubai" and it comes as a delight to hear "I read a book about James Bond last night" or, joy of joys, "I would like to go to Australia to see the animals." I suppose that "limited horizons" might be less objectionable to your sensibilities.

Missing out not only Charles Dickens but also the shopping list (even though I provided a bilingual version), it is almost possible to do things with Headway.
