I was wondering which places in Japan are the most liberal. Not politically, but I mean in appearance, personality, etc. standards. If I go to Japan, I would definitely like to keep up some form of entertainment. I don't drink, but I do like to go to clubs/parties for the music. The music I would mainly be looking for would be reggae (preferably dancehall/dub, etc.), hip-hop, jungle, breakbeats, drum & bass, etc..
Does anyone know which city or cities are less conservative? Or are there any?
Any advice?
Thanks very much!
^_^

You've basically described Roppongi, although I despise the area because of the rubbish foreign population. I'm not saying foreigners in Japan are a bad thing, not at all - just the ones that seem to migrate to Roppongi.
I'm not sure about the Osaka scene, but I know one exists there. Don't expect any major clubbing scenes outside of major cities. |

Kobe is.
Some parts of Osaka and Tokyo would be to your liking. |

Shibuya and Shinjuku, yeah. Although Shibuya is mostly high school kids, and Shinjuku has some seedy areas. |

Hi Meghan,
You will find heaps of shows, gigs and clubs in Tokyo. Never been to Osaka but same on a slightly smaller scale.
Go to any gig and you will find flyers advertising other shows. There really is a plethora of possibilities, all rather costly and many minus a vibe, unfortunately. Very young crowd.
The outdoor events in summer might be fun.
Also, check out the gig guide on-line at metropolis.com, I believe. It's the local freebie publication in Tokyo.
Good luck,
