For years i've wanted to visit japan and I felt teaching would be the best way to travel and earn a salary while doing an interesting job. Anyway I was recently turned down by jet and I think it was because I wanted to bring my Mother with me. She is 61 and I am her only child. I feel it would be best for her to join me in japan. Plus I know she has always wanted to travel. Is it at all possible for my mom to be my dependant in Japan? She is practically my dependant now in the states. Seems like the japanese government considers this on a case by case basis. I contacted Nova and they said it would be impossible to accommodate my mom. If anyone knows of any laungage schools or programs the feel diffrently of have a different policy , let me know

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs defines dependent visa holders as follows:

Quote:
(type of visa) Dependent*
(3 years, 2 years,
1 year, 6 months
or 3 months)

[Activities authorized to engage in]
Daily living activities on the part of the spouse or unmarried minor child of those who stay in Japan with a status of residence mentioned in Table (a) (excluding Diplomat and Official) or with a Cultural Activities or College Student status of residence.

The red underlined portion is my emphasis. Your mom is neither your spouse nor your child, so she does not qualify for this type of visa.

Maybe (MAYBE) she could get a cultural visa or one for Designated Activities. Read the MOFA site for details.
