C S, okay, so their are some girls who'll fall in love with a man and not just his wallet. But you think these girls could/would fall in love with an English teacher who makes 7/8 million IDR a month? Another serious question, so thank you for your reply. |
It happens all the time. Plenty of EF teachers end up in "real" realtionships with Indonesians. 7/8 Mil is, to the average Indonesian, a fair wad of cash. A policeman in Jakarta earns RP600,000 per month, for example. Of course, they have to er suplement this by various means, but most people in Jakarta live a very financially poor life. A lot of people earn around 20,000 a day. So if a guy is earning 7/8 mil per month, he's still a "catch". |

Do you really think students at EF who pay 1 million for a 2 month course are surviving on 20,000 a day?
The fact is that many Women in Indonesia are very beautiful, sincere, feminine, and interesting. It is little wonder that many foreign men marry Indonesian women. On the other hand I have a few foreign women who have married Indonesian men. The fact is that we are all members of the human race. Colour of skin or country are inconsequential to what really makes a person.
In my oberservation the Indonesians who have married foreigners do so for love, not money (then again I haven't any expats who have married Indonesians while working at a well paid job) |

No. Do you really think that was a sensible question? Who was talking about students? |

No matter where you are in Indonesia it is possible to date a local women.
A teaching colleague of mine has just moved to an International School in Bali.
He was commenting about the difference in dating between Indonesian and Chinese women.
And Balinese women are about the most conservative women in Indonesia. |

Yaco - thank's for your input.
I have been batting the question in my head for a year. Which country do I like the best? Philppines or Indonesia. I have only spent 2 weeks in Indo. but more than 5 months in the Phils. The Phils is Asia's only english speaking christian country, so that's a big thing for me. But the Indonesians were also very friendly and there are many similarities between the two. I was wondering about the low salaries I keep reading about here; about not being able to save much money. So then I naturally wondered about the ease of finding love. Now that's answered.
I'd love to live in the Phils, but they don't need english teachers there and I don't know what else I could do short of being a scuba diving instructor. Two months of training and over $2k. for tution would prepare me for a position like that with salaries between $600 - $1,100 a month.
So, I'm now working in SZ, China, but thinking of taking a job in Indonesia.
Is it better to get ones own apt. or are the rooms furnished comfortable enough. What about bringing a g/f over?
Thanks and Cheers, Rowdy |

Usually a school will organise accommodation ( shared ) or give you a housing allowance.
You can rent decent apartments for about 1m rupiah per month if choose to arrive in Indonesia without employment.
The catch is that you often have to pay for 3 - 12 months in advance for accommodation.
Taking a girl who is non - Indonesian can be expensive because of visa requirements.
For example if she comes on a 30 day tourist visa she will have to leave the country and re-enter. Unless you live near Batam Island or Medan which has a ferry to Singapore or Malaysia it becomes an expensive proposition.
She can come on a Social Visa ( 6mths ) which is sponsored by an Indonesian or a ' Bule ' with a KITAS, although you must visit the immigration every month after 2 months, to get a stamp in your passport for a fee.
I hope this helps ! |

Hmm, Chester. Interesting idea but who, exactly, do you get to sponsor your KITAS? |

i know many girels who could care less about how much you make, and i know many girels who wont date you unless you make 50mil +.
i have had the idea that TBI is a good school
however diving sounds good , i think its the same (you`ll never get rich)
if its $$ you want better look at coal, gas and oil or shipping 40mil-80mil
you can live ok on 8-10mil with a wife and kid untill ... well for a short time.
i have been very happy here but to be honest if you want to have a life and want to go home with a famely better look for 15-20mil
for a guy who just wants to enjoy life and is singel 7 or 8 is ok.... |

I thank you for your input on the situation, but really. It's not possible to live on 8 million a month??? I mean that's $1,000 US! I know people in America who can live on that, with an apt, rent, food, clothes ect.
So in Indonesia, where it's much cheaper, I find it difficult to understand why one can't live comfortable for less, like US$500 a month. Seriously. Now, having said that, I really seem to spend most of my $1,100 a month (without trying), salary before I get my next months paycheck. I don't drink or use anything expensive, I send texts more than talk on my cellphone, eat at school thru the the whole week, go on dates maybe two times a week and only to to the MP infrequently, so I don't know where my money is going. But from the first of the year I've been spending over 1 K. RMB each week in HK, so now I know.
Thank's for all the informative posters. Cheers, Rowdy

It depends on what kind of a social life you live. It's the nightclubs, bars, and western-style restaurants that eat up your rupiahs. If you like to go out on the town a few times a week, 8 million Rp doesn't go very far. On the other hand, if you're a "homebody" and just go out on weekends, you can live okay on 8 mil and even save some money. |
