For learning the Hiragana and Katakana there is a great system developed by James W. Heisig. I used it and learnt the Hiragana in under 3 hours
I tested myself yesterday and could remember 45 out of 46 of the little critters (I forgot ひ)
I forget the title but it is something like "Learning the Hiragana"
