I understand that there are certain risks, as it would be a 90 day tourist visa (as opposed to 3 months - big difference I've read).

Well, if those three months were Feb-Apr, the prime time to be in Japan hoofing it from interview to interview looking for a job from April, a 90-day tourist visa would be better than three months.

Thanks for the reminder.

I'm referring to the difference between 90 days and 3 months in the eyes of Immigration. For example, there are tales of gajin staying 3 MONTHS in Japan, returning to the airport, only to find Immigration not to happy that 3 MONTHS is a day or so over 90 DAYS.

there were two American students last year who spent a year in Japan, overshot their student visas by 2 days, were picked up on their way out of the country going back home and spent a week in jail and then were booted out of the country. (Yes, Americans do get deported).

Whatever you do, do NOT overstay the date stamped in your passport and assume NOTHING. with immigration and visa expiry dates.
