Hello.

I am considering working in either Taiwan or Japan and one of the things that will help me decide is how much money I can save in either country. Money is most certainly not the only thing I am looking at, but I have bills to pay in the States that will continue while I am gone.

I have a BS and a TEFL certificate and have taught adults for over 5 years in the evenings. Have also worked for Berlitz and I hear that carries some weight in Japan.

So what I really hope you all can tell me is how much you are saving each month in US $. Does it take a while to start saving money or can you begin doing it right away?

I am not into the bar/club scene and am quite thrifty (cheap) by nature. Living in a small (tiny) apartment even with roommates does not bother me.

Thanks for your help.

Ahh.. To heck with it... There are many, many more that I could cross-link to. But you get the idea.

Finally, or should I say FIRST, read the stickies.. THIS one: http://www.eslcafe.com/forums/job/viewtopic.php?t=3788 has info about how much money you can make here (among many other good, useful bits of information).

Good luck.

I aim for about 100,000 per month. Sometimes I fall short of that, though. I don't live nearly as cheaply as I could. I go out a few times a week. I could easily save a few more man every month if I just trained myself to stay in a bit more.

Jim Dunlop sums it up nicely. I think his post should be turned into a sticky. Other good sticky ideas would be grabbing those different AEON, NOVA, NOVA MM, Berlitz, ECC, etc. threads and combining all those into one big sticky as well. What do you think, mods? Paul?

With apologies to Jim for researching all those sites, I would like to add just one more point, mostly because I've probably contributed to most of those links.

How much you SAVE depends on three things:

1. What your lifestyle is,
2. What your location and rent are, and
2. What your salary is.

Not everyone makes the same salary or lives in the same place. Granted, you were probably just looking to get an average, but it would help if you stated where you wanted to live and just what type of teaching job you were shooting for. Not everyone, for example, teaches at conversation schools.
