does anyone know of anyone who has bought or taken out a long term lease (50 years) on a flat in Thailand? is it a viable thing to fo? by viable i mean cheap (under $US20k) and not overly-complicated (both for buying and subsequent living). i'm looking for a base to use between stints in various countries. something modest and small...in a not bad location.

This will provide you some information about owning a condominium.

You'll find a full range of prices from low to very high depending on the location, size, etc. There is still an oversupply of condominiums, so you don't have to pay high prices. I pass the condominium blocks in Cha-am quite often. In Bangkok there are many blocks which are nowhere near full. Still empty after all these years! Remember to bargain to prevent being taken for a ride.

I've noticed that some companies provide a service to help you buy a condominium, but they aren't necessary. Some charge a lot for the service.
