Ive been offered a job at a Japanese university and I currently work at a Korean university. The Korean universities start around Feb. 28 while the Japanese start around April 1. Im concerned with the possibility of not having the paperwork completed in time for the April 1 start and also the possibility of not getting the COE. I have to inform my Korean university ASAP as they start in three weeks. Ive read on the board that some people have been able to get the Japanese visa in Japan. The timing of the situation concerns me. I might enter Japan on a tourist visa and then wait until the certificate is ready and then try to get the visa in Japan or fly back to Seoul to get the visa. Has anyone applying for the certificate or visa been denied? Im concerned of being out of two jobs? Any advice is helpful. |

RE Japan, this is a real concern. Basically, getting someone in Japan to hassle immigration to issue your COE is the best way to get it quick. This is also the peak time of year - a big backlog of COEs to issue slows everything up. I'm not sure a Jpaanese uni would be happy you working on a tourist visa buyt they should have some clout at immigration. Can they give you any guarantee on when it will be ready?
Though I'm in Korea I don't know about Korean visa stuff as It is all taken care of for me... sorry... |

The university in Japan said it will take about four weeks once they recieve the signed contract for me. I hope to get the contract Friday or Monday and then a one or two day turnaround and have it back to them a week from Friday on the 18th. That means maybe March 14 - 28th it will be ready. |

That should give you enough time. Classes may not start until April 4 or 5. |

Gordon, I've read on the forum that some have been able to obtain the visa after they've entered Japan on a tourist visa. I will be in the Tokyo area. How prevalent is this? |

Not sure what it is like to change the visa, should not be difficult I'm guessing. My family had their dependent visa before arrival. |
