hi,
I`d like to know about Kanazawa. I probably am going to go to visit sometime and I am interested in TEFL jobs there too.
So, please share if you can enlighten me.
Also, how is the hiking and onsens in nearby prefectures (Fukui, Niigata, Toyama, etc.)?
thanks. |

The weather can be a hassle. Otherwise, a great city--both to visit and to live.
Not a huge amount of TEFL jobs, though. What are your qualifications, and what kinds of places are you looking at for work? |

I have 8 years of experience, and a MA in TESL. I am in my fourth year at a Japanese high school.
Actually I was asking for my wife. She has a MA in TESL too, and wants to work at an eikaiwa. What are the eikaiwa schools in Kanazawa?
And are there any schools for translation/interpreting (for Japanese people)?

The usual batch--Nova, Geos, etc. Some small privates as well--though, as I've posted before, you need to be very careful about a number of the local privates....
The area customer base, like that of many places in Japan, is at best stable if not decreasing--meaning that you typically need to wait for staff turnover to get hired. She should be able to get F/T work if she's a native speaker of English. If she's Japanese, she'll have a much more difficult time getting F/T work at these schools. However, she might be able to string together a number of relatively stable p/t positions.
The number of universities in the area is also limited. Of these, three universities--two in Kanazawa and one in Fukui--should be avoided at all cost. (Again, I've posted here before about them--pm me for additional details.) Due to the competition, an MA TESL--even with experience--would probably get you only p/t work at the better universities. However, you could get lucky--especially if you both have Japanese ability, publications, and can establish a strong track record locally.

As of 2001, no. |
