After months spent twiddling my thumbs and losing credibility with my peers I have just learnt that I will be moving to somewhere in Kyushu with NOVA on 31st March. I have a few questions and would be ever so grateful for your help:

1. What's the weather like? I put Kyushu as a preference back in November. I live in London so anywhere warm seemed like a Godsend to me. I understand I could be looking at Typhoons and such which should be interesting as we have never had one in Romford but, generally, how sun kissed is the island?

2. How easy/expensive is it to travel from Kyushu to, let's say, Tokyo, Kyoto and Okinawa? Also, how useful is Kyushu as a gateway to S.E. Asia? Is the occasional trip to Hong Kong doable?

3. What's the nightlife like? I know this is possibly a bit too general as I don't know where I will be but any info would be appreciated.

4. I haven't really focused too much on Kyushu when reading about Japan so I have a lot to do; are there any "must see" attractions?

5. Has anyone worked for Nova round there? What can I expect? Please don't just attack Nova in general. Should I not be asking this question?

Ok, ta for now. Any additional info. much appreciated.

Fukuoka is the gateway to Kyushu and from there you can catch the bullet train to Hiroshima, Osaka and beyond. Not sure of the fare but Kyoto-Fukuoka (Hakata) is about 12-13,000 yen one way) Tokyo is about an extra 10,000 yen from kyoto-Tokyo) You are probably better off to fly to Tokyo as the fares as the same as the train.

If you are in Kagoshima or Miyazaki obviously it will take longer as you have to make train connections and Im not sure if the bullet train goes to Kagoshima yet.

Pusan in South korea is about two hours from Fukuoaka by high speed ferry. Hong Kong is probably a 3-4 hour flight. You can see Taiwan from southern parts of Okinawa on a clear day. Maybe a couple of hours from Kyushu.

I worked there in 1988. Talk to ten people you will get 10 different stories.

Hi Paul. The Shinkansen does indeed serve Kagoshima City but only between Kago City and Shin-Yatsushiro. From there one needs to take the relay-Tsubame to Hakata (a.k.a. Fukuoka) station. The OP has questions that currently can't be answered. Although Kyushu is a relativelty small island, there are dramatic differences between Fukuoka and the rest of the island.

Apologies in advance for spelling mistakes. (I'm tired today).

Hot in the summer and cold in the winter. Becareful of typoons! Last year by best friend died! There was a landslide and it just swalled my friend. I had told him not to go out driving but he never listened to me.

It is very expensive! Specially taking the trip to Hong Kong. You will most likely have to fly out of Kagoshima international Airport or Kukuoka depending on where you will be living. Flights out of those Airports are more expensive than Narita or Kansai.

3. What's the nightlife like? I know this is possibly a bit too general as I don't know where I will be but any info would be appreciated.

What night life unless you are in Fukuoka. Remember they say, Kyushu people are stubbern and up tight. Most don't like guijin but put up with guijin because they know they need to speak English.

4. I haven't really focused too much on Kyushu when reading about Japan so I have a lot to do; are there any "must see" attractions?

Oh, come on! Let's be a LITTLE quantitative here, ok? What temperatures do you consider "hot" and "cold"?

It's the middle of February, and F-ukuoka is well above freezing at 10-14 degrees C. Heat wave to me.

Sorry for my earlier post. I've pulled my head out of my a*s so I hope to provide a better answer.

Varies based on location. For example, Fukuoka's weather is different from Kagoshima City's. Again, with typhoons it will depend on location. Last year Miyazaki and Kagoshima got hit hard. Regarding the sun, I can only speak about Kagoshima; the sun is VERY strong here; I'd recommend plenty of sunscreen if you'll be in Kagoshima.

If you live in Fukuoka you can get good deals. Depending on the time of year, a flight to Hong Kong could run you 40,000 or so. If you want to go to Tokyo or Kyoto you have the option of the Shinkansen or flying. There is an airline called Skymark that is a "budget" airline flying to Tokyo from Fukuoka and Kagoshima. Generally, all travel either within Japan or abroad, is expensive (in my opinion).

I don't know what kind of nightlife you're looking for, so can't really answer.

Nagasaki, Mt. Aso, Beppu, Yakushima, etc.

Good luck.
