Simple question but I guess difficult to answer??
I am looking at either Trinity or Celta, it WILL be one or the other but which one shall I do?
I plan to travel, eventually, worldwide, hopefully start in China, get a few years experience and see where it leads.
Which of the 2 is the best to go for in terms of recognisiation etc and following that shall I do it in the UK or abroad (not for cost reasons) as to getting work afterwards?
Thanks |

The Celta seems to be recognised everywhere. Where you choose to do it should be irrelevant. |

If you do the Celta where you are going to start working, you've got that much more experience in the country, you've already got a start on making contacts, you can get a taste for whether you even like the place, and the teaching practice you get will be with people who speak the same language as people you will be teaching. Since different groups have different problems with English, this can be helpful.
You can still go someplace else to teach and haven't really lost much. And then you will have two countries worth of experience already under your belt. This could even be a primary reason for doing it.
Of course, if you do it in the UK you may get a mixed language group, which would be good experience, as well, but not better than a month in a foreign country, I wouldn't think.
I did mine abroad because I was ready to get out of my home country and didn't want to wait till after the CELTA. Also, the programs near my home seemed to be difficult to get into because so many people wanted to take them. |

Difficult one. It partly depends on how much you are committed.
If you are still unsure, do a CELTA in the Uk ( cant think of anyone that does a TESOL course of the top of my head although there must be some )
This way you will get a feel of what teaching is like. If you dont like it you are still home and get quickly back into a "normal life"
They say that of the top 10 stressful things you can do in your life in move house and move job. If you take a course abroad you have 2 in one go.
Now, if you are sure or need an extra incentive doing the course abroad is really good. Because for the 4 weeks or so you are doing the course you are getting a hand held taste of what the coutnry is like. You arent just thrown into the newly qualified and i need to find a job and a place to live NOW scenario!! Also doing a course abroad does give you extra incentive to do it properly.
In China I dont know of any CELTA courses but again I am sure there will be some but there is TEFL International in Zuhai which is a TESOL course. Their cert is as recognised in Asia as the CELTA.
So at the end of the day - up to you and what you feel happy with.
Me? I did the course in Thailand because I needed the extra incentive to make the jump abroad. |

i did the course in hungary because i was moving from south korea to slovakia, and the cost of living was much cheaper in budapest than other places i might have taken it.
the course costs more or less the same everywhere. |

The CELTA has the bigger reputation. There are other factors, such as cost, scheduling, availability, etc. Given no other such factors, I would choose the CELTA over the Trinity. |

If you are on Job-seekers allowance in the UK you may be able to get the CELTA paid for as a vocational course - worth looking into anyway. |

I did my CELTA in the UK part time over 10 weeks and was also working full time. My life was completely chokablok but I really wanted my CELTA so badly that I enjoyed it - and I was commuting to a different city to get there once a week. It also gives you chance to read and absorb. (and I was working in a very well-equipped office and was praised so much for my generous photocopies/ visual creations/ etc..... Thank you bxdrolighwndordyhdkf office)
As you are finishing your CELTA, you should be asked by your tutors to consider what your next step is and start applying for jobs. You are one step ahead because you know where you want to go and have this site for loads of info. I wish this sort of thing had been available (maybe it was but I was not aware of it).
Good luck! |
