Coastal island idyll, whitewashed cottage, azure seas....This is almost certainly fantasy island, but I wonder if anyone ever got there? Ever since spending a few summer holidays in the Greek islands (Ios, Kefalonia, Corfu, Rhodos and others) in the eighties, and more recently reading John Fowles' novel The Magus, I've had the occasional dream of laid back teaching job, pay lousy but enough, and the above. Only a dream I suppose? |

You reckon, huh? Please elaborate. Are Greek cottages necessarily expensive to rent, for example? |

There are jobs in Greece. Problem is that they do not pay enough to live on. In the average "frontisteria" like in private language schools anywhere, the real money goes into the fat wallet of the fat owner. |

Most of the lively summer resorts that you will have visited shut down completely in the winter and the owners of the bars etc. move back to the nearest big town where they either get on with their winter jobs or live off their earnings until the next summer comes round. The cottages are certainly there to rent and for dirt cheap prices but the chances of finding any neighbours, such as the butcher or the baker are fairly minimal, let alone a handy language school. And did you ever notice that that idyllic holiday cottage didn't actually have heating installed. |

Yes John, but i did say i was only dreaming.....don't take my original post too seriously. However, there are some Greek islands which have towns which don't close down in the winter...eg. Crete (which has Greece's 4th largest city and a few 'working' towns), Corfu and Rhodos to name the more obvious ones. As has been pointed out by John and others, the main problem seems to be lousy pay allied no doubt to the general paucity of jobs in the outlying islands. I guess I'll have to try and save some dosh here in Asia and retire there, or save enough so I can survive on p/t rates. |

Yes I have found it, it is on the island of Crete. Very beautiful, the beach my wife and I found was deserted too. I don't think there was a language school, but then we weren't looking. Wonderful memories. |

I am presently living the "dream" as it were. I left Canada with a friend at the end of July and ended up in Chios, (touristy in Summer but is still up and running now) I got a job with a local private school (about 600 students) nad am making neough to get by...barely. However when I get off my ass and find some private students the pay will become much better. Might I add that I do not speeke Greek (yet). I am also a Canadian Citizen...I have been outstandingly licky...but it can be done...Just FYI. |
