evidently most schools that ive applied for the in the past 2 months are hiring for april. a few weeks ago i was prepared to get up and go to japan right away but im less prone to do that now and am considering applying again in a few months. i hope my chances of landing a job are the same then as now...so when did most people start teaching? please vote.

There are jobs available all year round, especially with the conversation schools.

With universities, companies, and school system jobs they are more likely to be looking for teachers when the fiscal/academic year begins in April.

My advice...join a conversation school in the fall and start looking for better pastures to get into the following spring.

I don't think April (or the otehr hiring frenzy in October) is such a make-or-break thing. Hiring doesn't seem to cluster around the April start-of-year thing much, since although students tend to quit and start in April, they seem to do the two activities in equal numbers.

I've worked for 2 small schools.

One, I got hired and started in August (by phone while living abroad).

The other, I started in December though the actual hire was in October, while I was laying in a Japanese hospital with a broken leg that kept me hospitalized 3 months and gave my new employer the fits. That time, I was replacing a friend who could afford to stay at the school until I was ready to take the reins from him.

Both hires were so I could replace teachers who were leaving in mid-contract.

Perhaps the raelly big schools can afford to have a distinct hiring season, but for small schools it's nearly always "Oh my god, Mr. Smith is leaving us in mid-contract...let's scramble to find a replacement."

This seems to be true for the best and the worst small schools, and everyone in between. I can think of one really primo school and another that sucks, for example, where teachers quit by leaving a note on the school door saying "I quit, I"m gone" and going straight to the airport.

in february

ps: I applied to ECC first and they accepted me...I declined their application (cause i went with AEON instead)... telling them that my plans had changed at this time and they said they would hold my application for 1 year. So if I don't like where I am now, I can always contact them.

so you might want to apply anyways, and try this technique...although I don't know how good or bad it is....I also don't know if it would work with other companies....
