I've been trying to find programs that are similar to JET and so far this is the only one I could find. (where they place you in real schools).
Has anybody worked in Japan under Earlham College's program? If so, what are your thoughts/experiences?
Thank you...your posts, as always, are appreciated! |

Never worked for them but I looked into the program a couple years ago. I decided against applying due to: 1. the time & expense of the interview process. 2. the "Christian" aspect of the program. That was only my choice; who knows, it might be an OK deal.... |

Mosley,
Could you elaborate on what you meant by a "christian" aspect? |

Earlham's "mission statement" refers to the Quaker orientation of the college. It's in their website.... |

Mosely,
I checked out the website...thanks. I don't think I will apply (same reasons as you). I certainly don't want to head to Japan as a quasi-missionary...
Cheers! |

Old thread, but in case anyone else looks up the Earlham program here, I want to point out that Quakers are non-proselytizing (not like Mormons or Baptists, for example). I think any Quaker values they aim to promote through the program would just be stuff like cultural understanding, peace, education, etc. Therefore, I sincerely doubt it's a quasi-missionary-type situation.
My friend got her BA at Earlham and didn't find it to be a heavy religious environment at all.
For that matter, technically, Stanford's a Unitarian school. (Could have fooled me...) |

Earlham will put you out in the sticks. If that's what you're interested in, more power to you.
From what I've heard, it's like JET only less money. Some people report good experiences, some don't. Although it's billed as more of a "study/teaching program", people I talked to who didn't like it said the towns just view it as a low cost alternative to JET.
I guess it's hit or miss. |
