He's a longtime ESL teacher in Taiwan. We used to work together in California. Anybody with info please post. Thanks.

Posts such as yours are likely to be viewed with suspicion by some. Are you a long lost friend trying to make contact, or are you a disgruntled boss tracking down a runaway employee?! I have no doubt that it is the former, but you may find that some could be reluctant to post any information.

I say this because I remember the response I got when I found the wallet of another foreigner in a taxi here in Taipei. I posted his name on some message boards and was overwhelmed with suspicions as to who I was and what my motives were. I am sure that at least one of these people knew the guy, but they didn't seem to have the common sense to even ask him if he'd lost his wallet, they just kept suggesting that I was someone other than who I was. I ended up calling the Australian trade office and they sent someone to pick up his wallet (complete with cash intact) so I assume that he got it back.

I would recommend that you post who you are then anyone who knows the guy can let him know about your post. Maybe you could say:

Quote:
I'm Pete from New Jersey and went to college with David. Haven't seen him for ten years, and was hoping that someone could put him in contact with me.

Then David could verify that he knows who you are and either email you himself, or just PM you through this site. Sorry to sound over-paranoid, but this has just been my experience with this kind of situation.

Paranoid group here I guess. OK, I am Dean Forbes. David and I worked as reporters at the same paper in 1980.

I would try the forums at www.forumosa.com.
There are lots of long term Taiwan residents over there and you're less likely to get a lecture on forum etiquette

I assume that this refers to me as the only one who took the time to reply to this person, so I'll ask. How exactly is my post a lecture on forum etiquette? I posted my experience about when I had made a very similar post only to receive a lot of distasteful replies, and gave advice about how to avoid getting the same type of replies that I got. This seems like helpful advice to me.

As a matter of fact the post that I made, and the one that I was referring to, was made over at forumosa, and that is exactly where I got the sort of replies that continued to suggest that I was somehow chasing the guy for money. In my post I didn't even ask for details on how to contact the guy in question, I just asked if anyone knew him to have him contact me, as I assume that he knew he had lost his wallet and would therefore appreciate its return.

Have I misunderstood your post Mark, or were you genuinely trying to be offensive?

How silly of me for not noticing this? I cant help but wonder what a fun board this would be if everyone wrote in jest of the posts of others!
