You will get a similar response in China as well. I have to agree with Big John in that there is not as much anti Japanese sentiment on Taiwan as many of the other countries that were occupied by Japan before and during WW2. The only people I have encountered that continue harbor these kinds of anti Japanese sentiments on Taiwan are of course the more ignorant and the descendent's of the defeated Nationalist Chinese that fled to Taiwan after their own people kicked them out.
In fact many of the older Taiwanese look back at the Japanese colonial period as the good old days. That period was also the only time when Taiwan had any kind of rule of law. Crime was practically non existent and infrastructure was relatively better then, than what it is now.

Jesus Christ... Shocked

I mean... Were you just trying to have a bad time there, or what? Why not go to a redneck bar in Arizona and when asked what countries you like say Iran and North Korea?

Don't you see how insulting national pride's kind of, like, a bad idea?

First of all she knew I had lived and worked in Japan for four years when she agreed to hire me. She had said she thought Indea was the smartest country. So when she asked me, I said Japan. I had only been in Korea for a couple of weeks so I didn't know the culture yet. Besides even if I did I don't lie! Ever!
I found out later that Koreans are very insecure. They take everything personally. They got offended when I said I liked Japan because to most of them that meant that I didn't like Korea. Which is not true, well now it is. But then I could of liked both Korea and Japan as well as many other places.

Taylor, I plan on visiting Taipei, but I will be working for a couple of weeks somewhere else. And from what I have been told and reading on this thread I believe what you wrote to be true.
About Koreans: Actually, I am trying to forget about my experience in Korea. It is not good to hate. Bad for the soul.

In reply to the original post:
Wages and available positions for foreign teachers on Taiwan are stagnating or even decreasing island wide as a result of recent government decrees banning English language learning in schools.

The reason is simple. Unlike Korea and the mainland Japan had a positive presence in Taiwan.

Taiwan was a colony of Japan for a long time and the Japanese set up a strong infrastucture. They set up the school system, forms of local government, the health system, etc...

Also, along with the US, Japan is against the mainland claiming Taiwan through aggression.

Agreed. Taiwan has an ally in Japan. Taiwan also fared better than others under the Japanese.

Interesting! But Japan did do some good to Korea. In 1910 north and south was about to have their little war. Japan invaded to protect their interest in Korea. Only 8 years after Korea got their independents from Japan, the north and south finally had their little war.
The irony is that many Koreans hate Japanese people and blame the U.S. for their war.
Anyway thanks again everyone! I really enjoyed reading your prospectives and I am looking forward to visiting Taiwan this summer.

Hi guys and girls,

Yep...I've also felt very uncomfortable in Korea regarding my relationship with Japan. (my girlfriend's Japanese and I'm going there soon, FINISHING IN KOREA!!)

Before I told anyone at work about my girlfriend, I had Korean co-workers, in the first couple of weeks, telling me things like, "I like Japan, I just don't like the Japanese."

The amount of blind, ignorant racism towards Japanese here, is phenomenal.

I'm an Aussie, my father's uncles fought in the Pacific war. One was a Japanese POW. I acknowledge history. But I don't use it as a basis (or excuse....) to keep hating another group of people or whatever...

The Koreans and Chinese have gotta grow up. China has a horrible human rights record. We all remember Tianenman square etc. There's Tibet...and there's always them threatening to blow Taiwan out of the water.

And as if the Koreans are angels. What about before the Korean war, when South Koreans went into Jeju-do (a Korean island) and killed more then 20,000 people. What about the NUMEROUS atrocities, the south Koreans and North Koreans have committed to each other and their own people. Things outside the scope of just firing bullets at an enemy in a uniform. I mean,....cruel stuff. There's been heaps of it. Before, during and since the korean war.

And how about in WW2, according to MANY accounts of former allied POWs.....the Korean guards were usually the cruelest and most sadistic guards in the Japanese POW camps. (Many Koreans fought with the japanese, conscripted or willingly)

The Japanese often made them guards in POW camps, cos they were known for their brutality and harshness.

I'm happy to go to Japan soon, where I find the people so much more rational, cool, calm and gentle in their minds.....as opposed to the emotional, not so calm, not so rational Koreans.

I've had so many people in Korea swear at me, spit at me, refuse me to enter places, stare at me, shove me etc etc. etc...cos I'm a foreigner.

They've gotta start looking at themselves and mature.

Go Japan. Go Taiwan.
