Hello everyone! Just two more weeks and I am on a plane to Japan. I can't believe how time flies.
Anyway my question. I will be working in Tokyo but my friends are in or near Osaka.
Does anyone know will traveling from Osaka to Tokyo be expensive. I am on a limited budget because I won't get paid until a month and a half after working there. I don't want to say anything to my friends because then they will offer to pay my way to Tokyo. |

I am not a troll! Thank you very much! I used to live in Japan as a student for half a year, but that was a few years ago. I hope to get an idea of how expensive is it to take the bullet train from Osaka to Tokyo. When I used to live in Japan, my Japanese friends would say traveling abroad is cheaper than traveling around in Japan.
If anyone knows a website that I can get the cost I would be grateful! |

Ignore Big John Stud. He has been reprimanded before about his responses. I hope he is censored for this posting, too. |

Night bus = about 7000 one way.
Plane = about 13000 one way.
Bullet train about = 13000 one way.
Just under double for return.
You expect your friends to pay for you to visit? |

Wow thanks everyone! It is not as much as I thought!
I have one last question.
I did notice that a flight is the same price as the bullet train. If so what are the benefits of taking the bullet train? |

Why are you rolling your eyes? S/he said she wasn't going to mention it to her friends because they'd offer. I have a few friends and relatives like that too.
Sheesh... |

More comfortable, no hassle with checking luggage and standing in line, won't be cancelled due to weather, probably connnects better to local trains, vending machines on board...
No contest if you ask me! |

Here is a link for anyone interested in prices and timetables for trains. I think the bullet train would be cheaper and certainly more convenient than a plane. In fact it is 14,000 on the shinkansen and 20,000 on the plane and the train is slightly faster.

Thank you all so much! Interesting. Gordon and wintersweet both wrote that the train is faster and easier to travel on. I would of never imagine.
And a special thanks to wintersweet! You are right, I am not saying anything to my friends, because then they would pay my way to Tokyo. They would probably buy the tickets before I even get there. We grew up together and I don't want to take advantage of their generoiusity. |

You really could visit any time. You may want to get settled first and travel to Osaka later with one small pack. Travelling anywhere in Japan with lots of luggage is never fun or easy. |

what it comes down to is where you are coming and going in relation to the airports.
If you are coming/going to places near either Itami/Kansai Kyuko or Haneda, the plane is ok. But generally people tend not to live near those airports, so taking the shinkansen is easier.
For me, I live closer to Shin-Yokohama station than to Haneda. So, I prefer the train.

If money is going to be a problem, best to start work now and visit your friends later. You'll be settled in then, and cash problems will subside so you'll have more fun.
Gordon's right about travelling with less luggage on a later trip. Less is better! |
