Be advised that pay rates, benefits and working conditions on Taiwan continue to deteriorate for foreign teachers.
There was a work advisory to that effect posted on this forum before Brian (aka Clark W....) had it removed.
It is very common for teachers to find themselves working in a job and under conditions that were not stated in the original job offer.
You are taking a much greater risk taking a job from overseas than coming to Taiwan to find work.
Taiwan's toothless labor protection laws are widely ignored on Taiwan and foreigners as a general rule have no rights to speak of regardless of nationality. Expect the worse and you won't be disappointed.
Welcome to Taiwan.
Good luck,
A.

Firstly, I have never asked for any post or person to be removed from this board. I have, from time to time, made complaints about the conduct of three members of this board (Jason Seeburn, AKATDN, and EOD) and asked for them to be given warnings. I have no authority to remove posts nor people from this forum, but everyone has the right to raise concerns when the board is being hijacked. I exercised this right with the above named three, and I am sure that anyone who is familiar with the trash they often posted would not feel that my requests were unreasonable.

I don't recall which thread you are referring to, but have never asked for anything that Aristotle has ever written to be removed from the board, nor have I ever requested that Aristotle be banned. It should become evident from my posts that I enjoy correcting the misinformation that Aristotle disseminates, and certainly do not need the board moderators to intervene. I have common sense, facts, and a pretty good knowledge of how things go, all on my side. Aristotle has fantasies, conspiracies, and rumors on his side.

It may be common in some circles (i.e. illegal workers) but is not a neccessity in a professional school. Teachers who research positions and research schools well are in the best position to avoid troubles. Reading contracts carefully and applying common sense are the next surefire methods for avoiding making mistakes. If a job is paying a lot but asking very little, don't walk in blindly thinking that you have found the deal of the century but step back and ask yourself why the position is offering so much when others are offering so little? There may just be a reason for this!

Agreed. You wouldn't accept a job back home site unseen, so why do it here in a foreign country?

I disagree on this and am speaking from experience when I say that they can work in our favor. Readers should be aware that this opinion is coming from somone who openly worked illegally in Taiwan for many years and has no doubt never actually attempted to understand the legislation nor take action against an employer. I have and I have won on two occasions.
