|
|
Hello,
I was just looking a the HESS website and they said that all teachers must provide a criminal background check from their home country in order to process a work visa. I was aware of the health check in Taiwan and the degree requirement, but I hadn't read anything about a background check until now.
Is this standard? If so, how do I get one? Just go to any police station?
Any help would be greatly appreciated! I'm leaving for Taiwan next Monday!

My wife is from Taiwan. We got married in early 1999. At that time, I was asked to provide similar documentation.
My father knew the sheriff of our hometown, so he just asked them to type up a letter saying that "this individual has no outstanding warrants or any record of criminal activity." Of course, they used letterhead to make it look official.
This is something that Hess is doing on their own. It is not a new government requirement.
This whole idea came from Europe....Germany, I think....where they have a standardized process for providing this type of information.

The criminal background check is a new requirement by HESS not the CLA. HESS has been attempting for several years to provide better quality teacjers without paying for them. A criminal background check is done locally to see if an applicant has a police record on Taiwan. As Taiwan's police force is notoriously corrupt there is no information sharing agreement with outside police agencies for people who have not been charged with a crime. With the new international security protocols implemented after 9/11 it may be the airlines who flag suspected criminals and not the local police.
Hopefully the CLA will follow the policy set by HESS and make it part of visa process as criminals should not be given the the trust that teachers need to do their jobs.
Welcome to Taiwan

Two things I agree with Aristotle about.
Hess is to be commended for taking the step of requiring this of it's teachers, and hopefully the other large chain schools will follow suit even if the CLA doesn't.
It sounds as if the information on the Hess site may be a little misleading as this is not currently required for the processing of a labor permit, but it seems that it is now a requirement adopted by Hess before they will apply for your work permit. It is a Hess requirement, not an official requirment of the government.

There are far too many convicted criminals teaching English on Taiwan. |
I doubt that we are talking about very many people, but only one is too many so I suppose I need to agree with Aristotle on this.
Criminal background checks have been required for APRC's (the open permit through marriage that Taylor refers to) for some time, but not for ARC's. I recall when I first came many years ago I was told to prepare a criminal background check for my ARC so I did, but I don't think anyone actually asked me for it. |
