i COMPLETELY agree with you matt... i have never experienced anything as ridiculous and ubiquitous as the argentine piropo. for better or worse, the most persistent and creative catcalls one can imagine. i got the impression that it is a game mostly for the benefit of the other men around. if they get any kind of reaction (roll of the eyes, a blush, evil look, ANYTHING), they win and it will never end. and the nicknames they come up with... Shocked

although, on a bad day, it can be nice to hear that you are the woman of someone's dreams that they've waited their whole life to meet you and their heart breaks as they watch you walk away (even if it is only a game) Laughing but, neither can you tell when they will be more on the aggressive/perverted/offensive end of the spectrum Confused

rather than the elaborate stories of past lives and future children in argentina, in costa rica, they tend to be short, sweet, and to the point. (hola linda, mi amor, etc.) cuba was a lot of ts, ts, ts and mamacita's.

mattheboy's racist steretyping (all Ecuadorians are two feet tall, "short-arsed dwarves", etc.) is typical of the kind of behavior that gives EFL teachers a bad name in Latin America. It should not be tolerated on this forum.

His recurrent need to make fun of Maradona is also unacceptable. Maradona is a classic victim of his own talent and fame--neither of which are attributes of mattheboy.

How is this racist sterotyping? Ecuadorians are not a race. They are a nationality. They might even be the same race as mattheboy(caucasian).

Furthermore moonraven, I feel that most things you post are hateful. You seem to be outraged at what people say too often. Can we all just fill the love in the world!!!

Don't try to get coy with me, buster. There was absolutely no excuse for mattheboy's hateful, racist post. Folks who come here and look down on (figuratively or literally) Latin American people create nothing but problems for the people here, for other teachers who are not arrogant racists and for themselves. They should stay in their own countries until they learn how to treat people from other cultures.

If that's the way he comes on with folks here in Latin America, he will soon be hearing--if he hasn't already: "Pinche brit, vayase a casa".

Moonraven, when you learn anything about Maradona beyond the fact that he's a guest of Castro at an asylum for drug-addled muppets on Cuba then you may comment on my avatar. He's not a victim of his own talent and fame, he's a victim of his own stupidity.

When you change your nationality (to English), watch a replay of the '86 World Cup 1/4 final and learn something about football then you may also comment. Oh, and after becoming English come and live in Argentina. Read the fat lad's autobiography as well and you'll learn that he's just a semi-literate simpleton who happened to be the best footballer ever. He's not a nice person, has no discernable qualities as a human being and even in Argentina people are starting to make negative comments about him.

I'm English, i enjoy making fun of Maradona. As the Argentines enjoy making fun of the goal he scored. And the fact that Diego Simeone deliberately got Daviid Beckam sent off in '98. You know nothing about football and the rivalry between Argentina and England. There's a lot of banter between the 2 countries which is always entertaining. Look, i changed the photo again. Oh god! How unacceptable.

And as for Ecuadorians, the men are a hell of a lot shorter than the average european. That's not racial stereotyping, it's a simple fact. Calling them 'short-arsed dwarves' may be heightism but it certainly isn't racism. Next time i'll make sure to call them 'vertically challenged'.

I'm afraid i'll have to ask you again; Please refrain from personal insults.

Hey, it's not my fault that Maradona may have been the best soccer player ever--although Pele has millions of supporters, too. Maradona is very popular in Argentina because he represents every poor kid's illusion--that he, too, could play in the World Cup. Those poor kids kicking the ball around in BA will not have the educational opportunities available to them that you have had.

That said, I am quite sure that it is not a requirement that one be an Einstein to play professional soccer, and I do not expect it to become so in the forseeable future.

I am also sure that being a nice person is not a requirement to play professional soccer (we've got an Argentinian, La Volpe, coaching the Mexican national selection here who certainly has not been given any awards for being nice--or charming); as a former sportswriter I can even opine that it is an undesirable quality!

It's also not my fault that you went to Argentina. Why are you there--to restart the war over the Falkland Islands?

As for personal insults, I have made none. Calling you a racist is not an insult, as you clearly revel in being one. It is a diagnosis.

I fail to see that making racist comments about Ecuadorians (one of the South American countries with the highest percentage of indigenous people) or taking pot-shots at an overweight soccer star are--or should be--particularly related to teaching English as a foreign language.

"talentless' i would class as an insult. Lack of fame less so.

And please, 'Restart the war over the Falklands'? Pathetic. What on earth has that got to with anything? I'm in Argentina because i love this country and the people here. Argentines taking the p*iss out of England's football ('soccer' doesn't exist outside of The States) team, David Beckham, 1986, 1998, penalties etc is a game out here, as it is for me to respond. There's no offence taken on either side.

The comments i made about Ecuadorians were not racist. Ecuadorians are shorter than europeans. Fact. Suggesting that i was being racist because the country has a high percentage of indigineous people is neither here nor there. I made no reference or allusion to this fact. I also made the comments in response to the posts on this thread. The majority of your posts, i might add, have little relevance to teaching either and your hypocrisy on that matter is astounding.

I shall continue this conversation no further as once you have an idea in your head your intransigence is equalled only by your arrogance. Chau.

You won't continue this "conversation" because you are dead wrong. This is not the first time that I have called a foul for your bad behavior on this forum. And it will not be the last, I am sure.

If you believe it's insulting to say that you are not a famous person, perhaps you and your megalomania should start your own forum?

It is interesting, Moonraven told me that she is close to retirement age yet she acts like she is a kid.

I did not tell YOU anything.

I have not, thank goodness, lost my inner child--I feed it carefully, and treasure it. It is one of the reasons that students of all ages respond well to me.

You would do well to treasure yours--instead of trying to become an elder at 20-something....

Alright, i'll respond one last time. I was obviously being sarcastic when i wrote 'lack of fame, less so'. That means that i don't find it insulting in any way, shape or form that you said that i wasn't famous. Duh.

As for bad behaviour, as you call it, i would suggest that your constant haranging of users of this forum who have the temerity to disagree with you to be the worst kind of behaviour possible. Free speech is something you claim to value yet it is something you wish to deny people who do not hold the same opinion as you.

Chau chau. Que tengas una liiiiiinda vida.

You are all for free speech if it means that you can make racist comments--or ridicule sports figures--in an attempt to bolster your self-esteem.

You can say whatever you want. That's your use of free speech.

And my use of free speech is to call you on your racist comments.

Interesting that you claim to love Argentina--where the policy of genocide against indigenous people was much more effective than it was in other Latin American countries....

I did not give you permission to "tutear" me.
