"At Choco-Tamp,we've got you covered" |

Good Day Maties:
OK, I've decided. I'm renaming this thread to "British vs. American English, Kent's Secret to Boiling Tea Leaves and R's Choco-Tamps".
Something for everyone!
Now who can find a way to combine all three?
I know: "Honey, have you seen my Choco-Tamps? They're in the boot, dear, next to the courgettes and the Oolong tea!" "OK dear, I'll just pop over to the car and have a look!" |

Dear R,
Sorry, but my chief financial advisor ( Kenneth L. Lay - late of Enron ) won't let me divulge that information. However, he offers his personal assurance that when YOU send YOUR info, it will only be used with the utmost discretion and integrity. And if you can't trust Kenny, whom can you trust?
Regards,
John |

getting back on subject again
"mind the step"
"mind how you go"
childminding
And can anybody explain why we can't conjugate the verb "beware"
as in "Beware of the Dog"
Why can't we say "I am bewaring of the dog"
or "I bewared of the dog" |

That's great, John! I had no idea that you had help. Okay, to get my bank details just register with my, um, private information website. to do this, simply PM me with your name, address and your bank details (for identity verification purposes only, to be used in the strictest confidence) and I'll, um, make you aware of all pertinent facts. |

Rogan - does it come from "be wary" of the dog? So you would say "I am being wary of the dog"? |

Hi Rogan:
I think Rob's absolutely correct.
If I'm not mistaken, 'beware' can be used in two ways: as an imperative: "Beware of strange EFL teachers!" or as an infinitive: "I always remind my kids to beware of large dogs."
And the etymology:
beware - c.1200, probably from a conflation of be ware (though the compound bewarian [defend] existed in O.E.). |

"beware" is that rare object in English : the defective verb. (Like "can" or "must") it only exists in certain forms. |

Don't you just love the English language? Words and whatnot, great stuff!! just look over some of these posts and all those lovely combinations of letters. Imagine if the language simply disappeared overnight. A pretty bunch of fools you'd look next time you stood up in front of your classes!
Rob, who could probably do with some more sleep. |

Dear R,
" A pretty bunch of fools you'd look next time you stood up in front of your classes! "
Hold on - you mean that's NOT how we're supposed to look?

John |
