Good news to all...I finally got hooked up to the internet today and totally within the dealines that yahoobb said. I got my NTT line within 3 days and my internet about 6 days later. With the help of Jimmie from yahoobbapply, it was a breeze. So far so good.

To all of you who read my previous posts about how depressed I was, today, I couldn't be happier! Very Happy

don't let your guard down with NTT.... i dealt with them regularly and was faced with nothing but sheer stupidity on virtually every occasion. and be sure, when it comes time to shut it off, that you cancel from both NTT AND yahoobb.

HA yeah getting intenet hookup is SOO nice. you don't realize how much you miss it till you dont have it.

When i went to Yahoo BB it said I would get the phone line from YahooBB...is this not true or are they renting the line from NTT?

I can answer that. NTT is the incumbant company. Others like YahooBB must still use their architecture... So YES you DO need to have a phone line from NTT -- you will receive both an NTT bill as well as a YahooBB bill...

I don't have YahooBB... I have Flets ADSL through NTT... I chose it because I was offered English tech support from A to Z....

Good luck whatever you choose.

Good one Worlddiva Smile I'm in the exact same situation, I got the internet hooked up through YahooBB just over a week ago and am so stoked!! It was so efficient. I sent the application off on the thursday, and had a phone line at my apartment the very next day!!! And then the internet was all ready to go once my modem arrived on the 6th day after the phone line Smile It's so great to have the internet at my apartment - I felt lost without it Smile haha, what a geek! Enjoy your internet!

I signed up for yahoobb today as there was a promotion going on (although their promotions seem to be perpetually going on). My understanding was that the yahoobb phone did not have a monthly charge. You only pay for what you use. I specifically asked if there was a monthly charge for the phone service and they said no. Hopefully that's actually the case, as I could very well have been lost in translation.

Well, if I understood correctly...the promotion was you get 2 months free of service and they pay for the installation of your phone line with NTT...YahooBB phone is free but you do have to pay for your calls. Keep in mind you still have to pay your monthly charge for NTT phone. This service is not free and is somewhere around 4000yen a month or so...depending on what you request. So basically you have to pay for YahooBB internet, plus your calls on Yahoo BB phone, plus your NTT line...every month

As for the promo, I know that the internet is free for 2 months but I'm not sure if you have to pay for NTT during this time...I think you do.YahooBB phone is always free expect for the calls you make.PS the reception is really good.

Oh, okay. That's a bit different than I was let to expect. There was no mention of any monthly charge for the phone service. I asked about that and was told that there wasn't. I guess I'll find out when the bills start arriving.

Also keep in mind that the Yahoo BB "2 months free" offer is a bit misleading. You get the first month free from when you first connect to your Internet access. So, if like me, your connection date was on the 20th of the month, you get 1 month and 10 days free. Don't be surprised. I knew it was going to be that way, but didn't care as I was sick of paying Internet cafe prices.

Yes, you pay NTT from date of installation. Yahoo BB doesn't pay for the installation of your phone line, but they do pay the one time "hookup" charge for connecting DSL to it. In the end, it is a completely seperate service - seperate billing, seperate cancellation.

I was just wondering how easy internet access is if you don't have a computer of your own? Is it possible to find internet cafe's that are easily accessible, what operating system do thety use in Japan(windows etc..)? I'd love to be on the internet but can't afford a decent laptop, and don't want to get my desktop shipped out. Other possibilities i'm considering are renting/hiring a laptop when i get there, although not sure how possible this is or cost effective!

Hey rich_n23,

As for the internet you have a few options.

Internet cafes are easily accessible and depending on where you are prices vary. I pay 200yen/30min. The cafe i went to here was clean, had windows XP (in japanese of course, but you can easily click explorer). It was my link to life for a while...until I got yahooBB at home.

As for a computer...you have a few options:

If you can't afford to bring a laptop you could just buy a desktop here. If you know enough about computers you could build it yourself, just buy the parts. Or, as one of my friends did he brought some parts from home and built it here, purchasing what he was missing. If you do this bring and english OS with you and an english keyboard.

You can also use the internet for free at your local international center. Although there may be a time limit.

Depending on what you wanna do with the computer...your cell phone will provide you with email...obviously you won't be able to get large emails but it's better than nothing.

Why don't you buy a cheap laptop that would be good enough to serve your basic needs? (you could probably get a used PIII, 500MHZ for cheap before you go).

Either way, bring the english OS just in case.

From my understanding when I signed up for yahoo 2 years ago is that if your sign up date is May 28 and you don't actually turn on and hook up your internet connection until June 1, then your free 2 months will start June 1, not on your connection date of May 28. That's what I did and it worked. Doublecheck to be sure because lots can change in 2 years.

You are correct Gordon and the same is still true. I said "connection date" meaning the date you first use the internet as you mention, not the date that Yahoo BB connects you and flips the switch to "on". Sorry for the confusion there.
