Okay, so Ive done some reading, but was just wondering what people thought the best Internet deal was here.
As in price, quickest speed, quickest to set up with minimal hassle etc.....

Don't know much but you should read my post about yahoobb, they were fast, efficient and the service works well so far. I also researched Flets but it was too expensive. www.bbapply.com
As for speed I got 26M, but you can also get 50M depending on your location. Anyways, it's crazy fast compared to Canada where high speed is somewhere 1.5M to 7M. Internet is pretty cheap here if you compare what you get and what you pay. Plus as far as I know there are no download/uploads limits. Plus, with YahooBB you get the IP phone too. |

Ditto on YahooBB.
As an American, the 2.5 Yen a minute rates to the mainland US are cheaper than what it costs for me to call long distance IN the US.

Depends on where you live really.
If you are living in a big appartment/mansion complex then that complex may already have a connection available to you.
If so then the usual case is that this pre established connection allows for a higher speed internet at a lower cost due to the fact that it is covered over the whole flat.
Such was my case and I ended up with about a 30 dollar connection that would have cost me nearly 80 dollars had I just gone with yahoo BB for that same connection speed. |

I have Yahoo BB and it is cheap, fast and excellent for cheap calls to around the world, PLUS FREE calls to other Yahoo BB subscribers.
HOWEVER, I find their English service lacking.... as in Ive never been able to get anyone at Yahoo to speak to me in English better than my basic Japanese level.
If you are rather inept at dealing in Japanese, or have no Japanese helper to help you with the application/problems, I suggest Flets.
Flets can be set up at the same time you request a phone line. Request to RENT a phone line for about 2000 yen a month, and tell them you want Flets too. They will give you information about a company called "OCN" if I remember properly, that will set up the internet portion.
Where I was, and in early 2003, Flets was using a 'not always on' system called PPPOE or Point to point protocol over Ethernet. You basically 'dial up' the service. If your computer is running XP, you have no problem as it is already set up to do PPPOE. HOWEVER, if you are running 98SE or similar, you will have to source PPPOE on the internet and install it. It is a royal pain in the rear for someone who even knows what they are doing with computers. On the plus side, they supply you with an ENGLISH setup manual.
They will probably try and sell you something called 'Myline" some sort of long distance discount scheme. It was confusing, and I would advise to decline, if they still have that.
English NTT operator is; 0120364463
You will have to call during regular business hours and be able to supply a fax of your gaijin card and have a place they can phone you back. That probably is work, so hopefully you can fax from work. |
