I went there about 6-7 years ago and I cannot remember but I do remember being astonished at the price. They have a limited amount of memberships and you have to buy them for a one off fee-in thousands of dolllars, then you pay monthly or yearly to use the place. My wife and I pretended to be interested when we got the sales pitch because we were too ashamed to admit that we didn`t have anything like that kind of money. |

I just went to Sports International because some of the people in our head office belong to it. This is the one in Sisli. It is very nice but spendy-- $950 membership fee and $1350 for a year for a single. We bargained and got the price down, but I don't have a credit card, so they wanted all the money at once, which I can't do. Bummer.
I really need a place with a swimming pool. Anyone know of one on the
European side near Taksim? |

This is how "new words" come into any language...if used enough. Languages continually evolve, and new words are part of the deal. Languages are never static, but rather in a continual state of change. |

"Spendy" is not all that old-- My American and Candian friends and I have been using it for many years. I'm surprised there is any comment on it, actually.

i just started using a rock climbing wall again - i'd dare not say gym because it's way too small - but i have heard rumours that there is a climbing gym somewhere off istiklal have any of you heard anything about that?
obesity is a problem - i see so many fat kids at my school and i think that the mothers aren't doing them a favour by stuffing them with food while letting them sit in front of the tv or play playstation all the time.
spendy??? - interesting, but no, never heard of it -and i too am canadian |

| Molly, there is a swimming pool at the top of Siraselviler at the Kerban/kervan(sp) hotel. It costs 10 ytl a day or a month membeship is 100ytl |

I know and use 'spendy.' If it's not a real word now, I expect it will be soon... How about 'pricey?'
It's not Taksim, but there's a good pool at the Crown Plaza in Bakırk�y, about 20YTL/day (oops, that's 2 years ago, though) for the whole sports facility, but I don't know what membership rates are. High, but not entirely unreasonable for residents... |

Would it be possible to get a group discount for English Time? If we could guarantee, say, at least half a dozen would like to use the pool they may be willing to give us a discount.
Could you look into it? |

| good idea 31. alot of sports clubs offer family and group memberships. I think a few years ago IH etiler offerd sports membership as part of their package. |

At Akademi which was near Vakkorama they had a deal with Vakkorama Gym but it was still 300 dollars a month. As far as I know only the owner`s niece and the students could afford it. |

Sports clubs are spendy. There is gym at my school but it's crowded with boys who smell. Not because Turks smell bad as a rule, but because there is a peculiar reek of (post)adolescent boys in a room together. Then the girls started coming and they all screamed around the gym too much, used the equipment as chatting areas, and stared at me in a way that made me feel dirty in the changing room so I quit. It's too bad, too-- 75million for 3 months, and a helpful friendly guy who shows you about stuff.
I thought I was crazy thinking spendy was a word, but I put it into Google and turned up plenty of pages, including an American dictionary entry. Now if only I could find a (affordable) gym for grown ups in B�y�k�ekmece... |

Have you tried the Kaya Ramada hotel? I know you need a car to get there from Cekmece or a bus at a pinch? They were giving out freebies last year at Migros shopping centre in Buyuksehir and from the leaflets it didn`t look too spendy. Also roughly opposite Malibu Hotel there is a newish storefront gym. From outside they look like they have some good gear but no pool. I cannot remember the name but it was in English. |

I am wondering why you don`t have a credit card. It must be difficult for you when you are back in N America. It seems like almost everyone has a credit card in Istanbul now. Do you deliberately not have a credit card or are you just not bothered? |
