I wont even pretend I have any idea what I'm talking about. I'm a soon to be graduate from the University of Maryland (go terps!) and I have an application pending with CIEE (Council for International Educational Exchange) Teach in Thailand. I'm extremely excited about my potential trip to Thailand, but I need information from people more experienced in the matter.

Is anyone familiar with CIEE? Are they reputable? Why don't I need a TEFL certificate if they're such a great organization?

Their schools offer a "minimum" of 10,000 Baht per month, housing and insurance and visa included. Is this a good salary? What should I expect?

Finally... Chiang Mai or Bangkok???

Anything I should know? Any tips? I should probably post this in the newbie forum, but this is specific to Thailand. Thanks a lot.

As "bluffer" mentions, you should do some basic research concerning Thailand and TEFL on this forum and others. Do a web search.

Also, go to the Thailand master index: http://www.eslcafe.com/forums/job/viewtopic.php?t=12862
for this kind of info, courtesy of Kent F. Kruhoeffer. Oh and whatever you do read his extensive FAQ near the bottom, which I have just noticed. khop jy lai lai Mister Kent.

Thailand is in dire need of English teachers. They take who they can get.

Go to a currency exchange calculator such as http://www.oanda.com/convert/classic
and you will find that 10000 baht is roughly $258 US. You'll have to decide yourself if that's a good monthly salary.

Actually, CIEE's website says

"A minimum local salary of 11,000 Baht per month (12,000 Baht per month in the Bangkok metropolitan area).

A free flight home from Thailand (one-way) provided by the host institution if you successfully complete a continuous 10-month contract at the same school (i.e. an academic year beginning in May)."

12000 baht = ca. $310

This kind of position may be good for someone with no teaching or traveling experience, but if you want to teach in Thailand have a look at some job boards before you commit to anything:

Bangkok is a huge city and Chiang Mai is a provincial capital. CM is no where near the beach. Bangkok is.
