for vacations and stuff, do you travel around asia? if so, where? i did tons of travel throughout the region when i was living in korea and i found it quite convenient.

If there was a category "Places other than Japan", I would choose it. I find Japan to be a good place to live, but domestic travel in Japan is overrated and overpriced IMO. Aside from Hokkaido, I have found many places to be contrived and "more of the same".

When time allows, I'd sooner jump a plane to SE Asia as the flight time isn't too long and I can buy airline tickets for about the price of 3 nights in a hotel in this country. Once there, costs are minimal.

Yes, overseas travel is more affordable and enjoyable IMO than domestic travel. In the past 2.5 years, we've been to Bali, the Philippines, Hawaii and Canada twice.
Last month I went to Tokyo and the shinkansen cost more than our ticket to Hawaii over Christmas.

While in Japan I visited, China, Korea, Russia, Mongolia, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Nepal, Myanmar, Hong Kong, Singapore, Australia, Italy, the UK, the Netherlands, France, and various US states including Hawaii.

I still managed to save too!

When I worked in Tokyo in 1985-86, I had no time to travel. Working 6-7 days a week will do that to you.

Since I moved to Hokkaido (different line of work than in Tokyo), I have traveled only on Hokkaido, and most of that was before I got married.

Taiwan and Saipan. Plus a trip back home to the States, but to me that doesn't really count as traveling.

A couple of trips within Japan, but nothing major.

I was considering seeing more of the "must see" places here when my contract ends in May, but I think that money would be better spent elsewhere. More travel bang for the buck outside of Japan.

I have been to Korea, Thailand, Canada, Okinawa, and will soon be going to Kyoto.

A week in Okinawa cost more than 10 days in Thailand.

3 days in Kyoto is going to be more expensive than 3 days in Korea.

I really haven't travelled a lot because we are concentrating on saving money.

Very, very much worth it! We spent 8 nights in Penang! Best time of my life!!!
Korea was a very short trip.
Bali was okay, but my boyfriend(now husband) and I fought a lot. Embarassed

Thailand, Indonesia, Malayasia, NZ, USA, Hong Kong, Europe. Could never do it on an Australian teacher's salary.

Malaysia, Thailand, Myanmar, India and Korea! Several trips back home in there too!

All were really good!

I've also been all over Japan but as far as value for your money all of the above countries beat Japan hands down.

There are good things to see here but as one poster mentioned much of it is "contrived" and I'd add ruined or destroyed!

I got to visit 20 prefectures in Japan as well as Korea, and the far east of Russia. Travel within Japan is expensive but at the same time worthwhile.
Being able to chill out at hot spring resorts would be one of my favourite activities.

In my first year in Japan I saw the major tourist sights like Kyoto, Nikko, Nara and Okinawa... But like many other posters tend to feel that travelling around Japan is not really worth the money you spend. I prefer to spend my money going abroad. While in Japan I've been to Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, the Baltic states, Russia, Egypt and back home twice (plus a stay on the Great Barrier Reef while I was there).

Hey Mike L. ... Where did you get your vaccinations when you went to India? I'm toying with the idea of going there later this year and wanted to know if there is any (cheap) traveller's vaccination centre. I enquired at one place but the cost for the basic set plus anti-malaria tablets was about 40 000 - 50 000 yen. Chotto pricey. Anyone else know?

Russia, indochina, thailand, australia, baltic states, morocco, eastern europe, etc.

Unfortunately these extended trips don't fit into the time frame of the average annual holidays so I have to keep quitting jobs and looking for new ones. It's making it hard to get jobs with so many long breaks showing up on my resume.
