Which one do you think is the best, cheapest, etc? I bought a receiver and I am wondering if I should have chosen another option. |

I chose cable because you can get unlimited internet access quite cheaply. Someone told me there was no Eastenders on receivers so I didn't look into it. I think if you are in to films then Digiturk is the best option. |

you can get eastenders on receiver if you go with two antenna. I can get BBC prime and world, but i rarely tune into bbc prime.
Actually, the range of channels is amazing. There is just about any language you can imagine, from chinese to arabic to even english. lots of italian and french. it is really weird sometimes to see a movie that was originally english broadcast in French, say, with another language's subtitles, watching it with a Turkish friend. What a world! |

Yes, an interesting thread. I was just about to take advantage of the special offer on Digiturk but I'd like to know what a receiver is and how much they cost etc.... Anyone???? |

a receiver is a decoder hooked up to your tv and one or two satellite dishes (one for Turkish channels and one for foreign channels). You pay for it all at once. A lot of channels need passwords and i haven't figured out how to get them (it involves money). the guy I bought it from solved the passwords for a few channels. if you want to be exposed to a lot of other languages and culture, the receiver is great, but i was actually disappointed at how few english language channels there were. Oh, and there are erotic and porn channels too, if that is your thing. They need passwords (and no i didn't get them). I think in the long run a receiver is cheaper (200TL +) but it depends on what you want from it. |

as some of you may know - living in the middle of no where has made me love my digiturk!! the movies are ok - but they play them over and over -but what i really love is the language button that lets me change shows and movies back to the original language, instead of it being dubbed over! |

russian dubbing is the worst. they just drone a narrative of what was just said, and it is all the same voice, no matter what the gender or age of the actors is. it's pretty bizarre. |

i was thinking of getting satellite there, but is there a legitimate satellite company? This "receiver" business sounds questionable. |

There is no satellite company per se, but there are lots of brands of receivers. Once you have it, you have it, and there are no monthly payments, etc.
There are lots of dodgy things here-- you can buy pirate copies of just about anything. One of the many charms... |

I mentioned internet earlier in this thread. But I have been cut off again. We pay the bill every month. Every month the PTT cut us off. Every month we phone them. Every month they say'oh. You have paid the bill' Why? (I'm at work at the mo) |

I wonder if these receivers are the same as the illegal ones we have in the States? You can use them fine for several months, but every now and again the company uses the satellite to zap the card, making it unuseable and you have to buy a new one. The more you have it on, the more likely it is to be zapped.
My ex had one like this, and sometimes while we were watching TV, some message like 'satellite located' would flash on the screen, and we'd have to jump up and turn off the receiver before the satellite sent the pulse...
But I don't know if this is the same... |
