|
|
One reason I am looking forward to living in Japan is that I hope to find cheaper okonomiyaki. I just love that thing and can eat it everyday! Unfortunately in california it isn't so cheap and rather inconvenient as I have to travel far to a place that sells it. Hawaii too, only one place here sells it. I was wondering how cheap it can get in Japan. |

There's a street shop where you can get a small one for 100 yen in Osaka near OCAT. While small, they are quite tasty and cure a craving! |

That's cabbage-yaki, not okonomiyaki.
Prices vary, around 600 yen upwards. |

In Hiroshima, prices for a full-size Okonomiyaki start at around 500 yen, and go up from there (depending on toppings and extras). We also recognize that there are 2 types: Hiroshima-style and Osaka-style.
Which kind are you into ?
By the way, a lot of us ( at www.ChatHiroshima.com ) have been tossing around the question of whether Okonomiyaki is healthy food, or junkfood. What do YOU guys think ?
Oh...another thing to watch out for is, there are 2 major Okonomiyaki sauce companies: Otafuku and Carp. Otafuku tends to be less sweet, Carp tends to be sugary. So, while you're eating at a restaurant in Japan, it'd be a good idea to note the type of sauce... if you like what you're eating (or not) may be a function of which sauce, not just the the chef & toppings. |

I've had both Osaka and Hiroshima style and I like Hiroshima style the best by far. Probably because it seemed less seafoody to me--but I'm not very experienced. Good to know about the sauces.
In San Francisco Japantown, I don't remember how much they charge for okonomiyaki, but it was Osaka style there. OH BUT HEY! In googling to try to find out the price range, I found out that there's a Hiroshima-style place in San Jose. (San Jose actually has more Japanese population than SF, even in raw numbers rather than percentages.)
I need to make a trip to San Jose and see if it's anywhere near as good as the stuff I had in Hiroshima itself...

You're confusing cabbage-yaki to okonomiyaki. |

In Machida, there's a vegetable stand with a little side kitchen that sells stuff like yakitori and okonomiyaki. The okonomiyaki is pretty big and darn tasty, especially for Y380. |

Usually, cabbage-yaki is sold for 100 yen. It is definately NOT okonomiyaki. Just ask the seller what it is. |
