I have lots of questions and need lots of advice. I am even new to discussion forums.
Here's my story:
My husband and I are both 30 with BA's, but no teaching experience. We would like to teach english in Taiwan. I have done a lot of internet research but I would still like some advice as to the best way to go about this. Also, I am wondering if there are other 30 year old married couples who have done this. The majority seems to be younger, single people but I could be wrong.
As a married couple, what are the chances we can work at the same school? Is there a good way to indicate that we are looking to work together when sending applications? Or are there any good placement programs that would place us together?
Any help, info, advice on teaching, Taiwan, etc. would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Hi,
There are many 30 something married couples living and teaching English on Taiwan.
Right now available positions and wages are decreasing on Taiwan as a direct result of race based decrees by the Ministry of Education (aka the Ministry of Racial Purity) on Taiwan forbidding non ethnic Chinese from Teaching English in schools.
I also would not suggest working in the same school as your spouse for a variety of reasons.
Please read this.

Good luck,

Go for one of the chain schools. These schools are more likely to be able to offer you both a position at one school, or at least at nearby schools of the same chain.
Avoid recruiters unless you think they can really be of benefit to you. You can have a read back through my posts on recruiters if you want to know my feelings on recruiters. |

Regarding married couples working in the same school-
I work for Kojen (one of the chain schools), and I'm pretty sure it would be troublesome to work in the same school with us. The reason is that come vacation time you will both be away at the same time. This poses a practical problem for your director needing to cover the hours of two people.
Having said that if you work in the same school for different departments, and therefore have different directors, you may be fine.
We do have married couples or couples in long term relationships who work for neighbouring schools and live between the two.
For this specific issue I would contact the schools in the area you plan to stay directly with this question.
