On a very very basic level i've always found Thailand to have the friendliest people (by far) followed by here in Argentina.

Mexico for me. Western Canada is a close second. I haven't travelled much though.

Mexico and Venezuela.

In late 2003 the results of a survey of happy countries were released.

1. Nigeria
2. Mexico
3. Venezuela

Maybe there is a strong congruency between folks who are happy and folks who are friendly?

I remember reading some time ago of a similar study on honesty and friendliness. The study involved leaving a wallet on the street in select cities and measuring the results of how often and how quickly it was returned. Latin American countries took the top five spots for most honest. I think Brasil came out on top.

Little studies like that make me smile when other people decide that somehow poverty and crime or even terrorism are linked.

I'm very surprised to see that Japan isn't in that survey's top three.

I found the "latest" survey results:

1. Venezuela (Go Chvez!) 55% Very Happy

2. Nigeria 45% very Happy

3. Ireland 42% Very Happy

Mexico has slipped to 17th (Fox's Pas de Maravillas, Bah!) 31% V.H.

US has climbed to 8th (How many times did Dubbya vote?) 39% V.H.

Japan is in 24th position. 23% V.H.

The least happy:

48. Estonia 4%
49. Slovakia 4%
50. Latvia 3%

Being a miserable sceptical git, I'm going to have to ask for the survey link, which everybody is so busy being ecstatic over that they've forgotten to give it.

I have traveled a fair amount - and have found Thailand to be the most hospitable - for me anyway. I've established my home there - and will retire there.

What stikes me most about Thailand is not just the good nature of the people - but also the fact that you can be in large crowds of people - be the only foreigner and never notice. They
