I am about to go to Trinity CertTESOL school in Spain and am wondering when to apply for jobs. I will not have the certification until mid-July, and do not have a specific idea about where I want to go, I am kind of open about it. But I dont know if I should start applying now before I have my certification, or if schools are even interested in me until I am certified, or if mid-July is too late to secure a job for the fall school semester. I am just starting this process, so any information you could give me would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Megraham,

I am afraid that you need to specify at least an area of the world to get the info you want.

Examples:
Europe - new school year begins in September. Jobs seem to pop up in January too.
Thailand - New school year begins in May (with 2 semesters a year the other opportunities would be in October).

Any idea at all where you want to go?

Laura

Laura,
thanks for responding so quickly, my main interests are in europe and latin america. even though the semester starts in september, are the jobs usually full by summer, or do they hire until right up to the semester?
thanks

Hi,

I don't know anything about Latin America but hopefully someone else will help you out there.

As for Europe... They will recruit right up to the start of the new school year. Also, it is usual for jobs to become vacant soon after the start of the school year - teachers not arriving / teachers not happy where they are working etc

Hope that helps

Laura

I don't know whether certain member states of the E.U. have relaxed their immigration laws, but judging by your post I would believe you are insufficently qualified to teach in Europe except in cowboy outfits of which there exist far more in Spain than in the rest of the E.U.
The least a language teacher must have to qualify in a European country is the skill to communicate in at least two languages, usually in three; apart from that they have a university degree in an education-related field, especially in literature.

The problem you will have is it will be almost impossible to get a work visa. To get a work visa you must be doing a job that can't be done by an EU citizen, and that is going to be hard to prove.

Teaching illegally in Europe is not to be recommended unless you have rich parents to bail you out. OK for just travelling around though.

Megraham does not state where she is actually a citizen of. Maybe she is not in need of a visa for a European country. I believe England is a European country, and England certainly does not require a teacher of EFL to be able to communicate in two, or preferably three languages. Megraham also does not tell us what her other qualifications are.

Megraham, you need to tell us where you are from and what your other qualifications are!!!!!!

Unless she's British or Irish she will, and this line in her post shows she's not either.

I am an American, I have a B.A. in Egnlish Literature and Language, in the middle of July I will have obtained my TESOL certification. I have some proficiency in Spanish, and am taking Spanish language classes for the time being. I am not comlpetely closed off to any place to work, I just wanted some advice on when to start applying for jobs, and if I will be able to get a job (retty much anywhere but I would rather South America) after mid-July. Any applicable information would be appreciated.
Thanks

I take it from your post that you believe that vernacular dictates nationality. How interesting that would be at immigration.
